After an absence of nearly two years smallpox has aain made its appearanee in South Pend. It's victim is Thomas fcHrontr. colored. of Chicago, who is a-member ef the A. Ik C team of ball players and who was removed to the isolation hospital Monday morning suffering from this disease. Strong was present at the game between the colored team and the K. ami S. squad played en the A. Ik C diamonds Sunday afternoon and according' to Dr. Charles L. Hosenbury. secretary of the board of health, all of the .spectators at that game have been exposed. Strong elid not play in the game, claiming that he was sick but no one suspected the nature of his illness Dr. Posenbury, Monday night, adviseel that all those who were at the game and were exposed to the disease shoulel be vaccinated at once, to prevent a spreading of the malady. Kfforts are being made by the health department to locate the members of the two teams and see that they arc vaccinated at once. Strong has been stopping at 7-1 N. St. Peter st. while in the city and this place has been thoroughly fumigateel. Not since October, 101C, has there been a ease e-f smallpox in South Demi and the health authorities are anxious to prevent it from gaining a feothedd in the town. Strong came here Sunday from Marion, lnd.. to play on the local team and presumably brought the germs of the disease with him.

This gas. lie sas is fatal in nearly every ease, its victims dying flapping their arms like the wings ef a decapitated fowl and with hysterical laughter on their lips. "There are three kinds ef gas over there." saitl Curtin. "a chlorine gas. a bromine iras. and unothe-r gas. which we. have not succeedeel in identifying yet. but whicb the men call "laughing iras.' "e have remedies for the first twe), but the only antidote for the third seems to be pure oxygen, which is difficult to get and which even then is not effective in all cases. "When the laughing gas is inhaleel the victim falls to the ground aval his bodv becomes rigiil except from his elbows to his finger tips.
