Two Experiment Stations Established Develop Strains of Plants Perfectly Adapted to Weather Conditions.

WA.HINr-;T". Juno 7. Uncle Sam has f.vu agricultural stations in A 1 a-s k a . These f xprriment stations arc in the Tanana and Yukon allevs, tho country that will be hipped by tho fcovc-rnnifnf.s railroad from Reward, on the coa.-t. to Fairbanks, 471 milts I lo the north. One of the stations is rlose to Fairbanks on thoj Tanana riw-r, and the other is at liampart. about luu miles r.ortruv.?st, on the VuKom. in a country which it is behuwd will appeal to fcettlers. Although not generally known, these station? have been maintained for li years by the department of agriculture. During the decade sinp the stations ' have become well established, the a- ; ricultural problems tiliar to Alaska ihae been steadily attac ked and many ' of them sol ed. One of the conditions peculiar to , Alaska is that the ground, besides j having on it a thb k growth of timber, is covered with a ht.avy carpet of ' mocs. Since rt -- it under sours tin iFoil, it must be removed, thus making ! the clearing of land a slow and exI pensive process. Other agricultural proldems en- ' countered ar- the short crowing seu5or.s. the hard-frozen condition f the l'rou'nd during a part of the year, tho j unall amount of moisture, and the I pest of rabbits. Attacking the.-c problems, the exi)erimeiit stations hae gathered much . valuable information. They h.ive also developed a number of new strains of t plants, almost rfectly adapted to the weather conditions in the country. Hy h bi idiation new barles have j leen prod'.ucd that mature earlier.

stand more rectly. and have better heads than any aricties brought in from tho outside.

All the barleys matured seeds under J the weather conditions of r.l'), the (most trying that hae h n met with in the interior since records luvc been kept. s- successful hac been the oxperlments with the barhws that the work

of their development is considered almost complete and special attention is now heinr; turned to the production ol

hardy wheats nnd other grains. Another of the important pieces of j Work of the station has been toward the drv lop mcnt of alfalfas adapted to : pro wt h in A la ska. I A en in 1 1 : several varieties matured s-.mIs and the plants that ha I I b en Kiowiri-r for two years developed their Jirst root nodules. In this is f-'en promise .f :i crop that will make possible the development of a live stock industry. The station also have proved that .potatoes can be succi ssfully frrown in Alaska in abundance and at a handsome profit. Alaskan potatoes keep better than those shipped from the states', and even in the most unfavorI'le years approximately 1" bushels Ijitr acre have been produced. Tarrots-. cabae. caulitlowc r. turnip, "beets, spinach and some other vegetables thrive as well in Alaska as in the states.
