Iv JII Sibley. LONDON, May it-;. i have made an interesting discovery. For a long time I couldn't figure out why the Englishman should run to large, strong teeth and his" clothes run to buckles, but I know now. It is the London buses. I've had a few jolts in them myself, and it's a pretty safe bet that if nature hadn't evolved a set of teeth with the roots extending well up Into the frontal bone, and braced fore and aft, the Englishman would be living on soup and gruel: likewise, if his clothes weren't attached to his person with buckles he wouldn't havo any clothes either, for the London bus has a motion that is decidedly all it's own. You who have had the temerity to ride in a Hill st. car, or have slipped (in- the top step (as per advertisement) of a long llight of stairs and traveled all the way down on your shoulder blades may flatter yourself that you" know a thing or two about rough riding, but you don't; you
j form of travel until you have jiggled a
mile or two on a London bus. They are undoubtedly the most rough-riding craft that ever jumped a curb. They call the conductor a "general," but it should be "mahout," for a seat on top of the thing is like a seat in a howdah. It sways sideways ami endways, and now and then humps up Its hack; there is no regularity to it, and you cannot accustom yourself to the motion. And the constant starting
and stopping is the limit. I think j these vehicles are fitted with jaw- j clutches; if they have a cone it has never made the acquaintance of neats-1 foot oil. Just about the time the un- j accustomed passenger gets to the head '
of the steps in back the machine will start up with a Jerk that nearly pulls his arms from the sockets, assuming he has a strong grip on the rail. If he hasn't a strong grip on the rail, it is well that he has papers of identification in his pocket. Still, I suppose the bus is indispensable. The fare is only two cents and one can ride for miles; the conductor gives you a receipt and always thanks you courteously. However, that hardly makes up for the discomfort one is subjected to, and in spite of this two cent opportunity to see London I prefer to amble about on foot.
