Considerable uneasiness was shown by the users of wheat in the. northwest as to the available supplies, and this is reflected by their daily lare purchases of wheat in the southw st. DESTROYERS NEAR WHEN LUSITANIA WAS HIT Officer Said He Had Orders Not to Risk His Boats, Claims Survivor.

NEW YORK. June 4. - A flotilla of British torpedo boats and destroyers was lying in Queenstown harbor while the Lusitania was being sunk a few miles away, according to F. J. Gauntlett of Washington, D. C., an officer of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. and a Lusitania survivor who returned on the American liner Philadelphia. Mr. Gauntlett also brought back the body of A. L.. Hopkins, president of the Newport News Co., who was lost on the Lusitania, was bitter against the British government and immediately upon his return consulted with counsel about bringing a suit against the Cunard company. "I was dumbfounded on reaching Quneestown." said Mr. Gauntlett, "to find a flotilla of serviceable torpedo boats and destroyers secure and snug

out their decks, while German sub-

marines were blowing up English ships a few hours away. "'The flotilla was in command of a superannuated officer. I made it my business to hunt him up and ask him why he was not outside doing something. He said he was under admiralty orders not to risk his boats." On the Philadelphia also were the

Hope That German Situation Eventually Will Be Cleared Up Leads to Extensive Purchases.

Ry Hnxulan Wall. NKW YORK, June 4. Wall -street Thursday brrke away from the apathy that has been influencing stock prices recently and began buying in the hope that the German situation would eventually work out amicably. In the last hour when prices receded slightly on profit taking the upward movement was givt-n additional momentum by reports from Chicago and Philadelphia that tho Steel corporation had won the suit brought against it by the government. Buying increased in teel and a few minutes before the close it touched 59 1-2 which was 4 1--points above the previous final quotation. The pronounced strength and vigorous rise in Steel imparted strength to the other standard industrials and railways with the result that closing prices were around the best of the day. with gains ranging from - to nearly 5 points in the standard issues, with advances of 2 to points in the spec laities. It was only the closing of the market that prevented further rise for less than half an hour after trading had ceased Wall st. received positive news that tho government suit against the steel corporation had been decided in favor of the company. An excited opening in Steel is expected Friday morning. The Steel decision is by far the most favorable development stock-market w ise in many months. Financiers and important stock market operators said it reflected the change in the public's attitude toward big business. The favorable Steel decision is ex

pected to result in activitv and strength in American Can and Corn Products stocks Friday. These companies have made good presentations of their contentions so that they are expected to win m tho suits brought against thorn. Counsel for Corn Products recently stated that they expected to win the suit. Copper shares wero prominent In Thursday's dealings, American Smelting and Amalgamate, Copper being the leaders. Utah and Inspiration led the porphyry group. Strength of the coppers is due to better demand for the metal and sale of the metal in Iondon on Thursday above I'J cents a pound. The buying of Inspiration was considered of the best kind and big things are expected from this company. Yaere was good investment buying of Union Pacific. St. Paul, Atchison and the other first t lass railroad issues. Mexican Petroleum and American Smelting were in strong demand throughout the session owing to the prospect of intervention in Mexico by the United States. General Motors rose 10 points in anticipation of dividend action to be taken by the directors in the near future. The bond market continues dull.

AMERICANSARE LEAVING Life in (iermany Said to Hae Hecome Intolerable.

CHIASO, Juno 4. Several American families crossed the frontier today enroute for Genoa and the United States. Their departure from Germany was occasioned by a social boycott, instituted by acquaintances and the rudeness of strangers. Life has become intolerable for Americans in Berlin and an attempt

by hotel proprietors this week to ex

pel American guests was only prevented by the police after representations had been made by the American embassy.

WHEN YOU WASH YOUR HAIR DON'T USE SOAP

Most soaps and prepared shampoos contain too much alkali, which is very injurious, as it dries the scalp and makes the hair brittle. The best thing to use is just plain mulsitied cocoanut oil, for this is pure and entirely greaseles?. It's very cheap and beats soaps or anything ele all to pieces. You can get this at any drug store, and a few ounces will last the whole family for months. Simply moisten the hair with water and rub it in, about l. teaspoonful is all that is recjulred. It makes an abundance of rich, creamy lather, cleanses thoroughly, and rinses out easily. The hair dries quickly and evenly, and is soft, fresh looking, bright. Huffy, wavy and easy to hanelle. Besides, it loosens and takes out every particle of dust, dirt and dandnrY.
