MEET JdMETTE Purdue University Makes Move to Harmonize Interests of Farm and Church.

I. A FA YI3TTK, Ind., May 11. Ministers of rural churches throughout Indiana are arriving here for the three days' conference beginning today. Pres't Winthrop F. Stone will welcome the visitors. Among those who will speak at the conference are: xiishop Francis J. McConnell of Denver, Colo.; Dr. W. A. Millis, president of Hanover university; Dean S"tarley Coulter of Purdue university; Mrs. Virginia Meiedith, a farmers' institute speaker, and the Rev. A. H. Storms of Indianapolis. The object of the meeting is to bring together the rural ministers and church workers for the purpose of harmonizing the interests of the church and farm communities. The idea is that the church should be the social center of the country community and that the pastor should be a leader in rural activities. The meeting is under the auspices of the agricultural extension department of Purdue university and is a. new phasti of that department's activities which have already been extended to the farm proper, the rural school and the rural home. No less than uOO ministers are expected. Several counties will send delegations in automobiles. Hendricks county has arranged to send all its Protestant ministers to the meeting.

BFDFORD. Ind., May 11. When Mrs. William Wood, wife of a farmer living near here, heard a hen which was raising a brood of chickens, make an unusual fuss uLout 'j o'clock at nigh, she went to investigate. be saw nothing, but the hen kept up its

excited cackling. Mrs. Wood fondled the young chicks in the nesd and noticed that when she took hold of one of them it seemed to be fastened to

something. She pulled it gently from its fastening and noticed that it was

covered with a shiny coating.

Suddenly Mrs. Wood taw a shadowy

form moving in the r.est and found that it was a large black snake, which measured four feet in length when killed later by her husband. In fondling the chicks Mrs. Wood also had been fondling the snake, which had sunk its fangs in her hand without her knowing it. She pulled the chick from the mouth of the reptile.

EATON RAPIDS. Mich.. May 1 1. Carl Haumer, son of Charles Haumer of this city, was seriously injured in an automobile accident at Fansing. according to a dispatch received here by the boy's father, who went to Ionising on the afternoon train. Young Haumer and two companions were returning to Lansing from Charlotte when the accident occurred, the automobile which Haumer was driving turned turtle down an embankment near crossing of the Grand Trunk railroad a short distance out of Lansing. Frank K Sexton of Lansing, who was riding in the front seat with Haumer, was caught under the machine and almost instantly killed. Raumer's injuries consist principally of numerous bad bruises and several fractured ribs. The young man has been working in Ioinsing for several months past.

MEANEST BURGLAR HERE Thief at Greenfield Steals Aged Woman's Shrouds. GRKFNFIFLD. Ind., May 11. On two occasions a little store here owned by John Morrison, a blind man, has been robbed, but the meanest burglar got in his work last night when he entered the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Hcndrickson. SO years old, and stole the clothing she hud prepared for her burial. Mrs. Hendrickson. after explaining to her friends the different articles she desired placed on her body, should she die unexpectedly, had carefully placed the articles in a trunk. Last night a burglar entered her homo and took the articles together with a quantity of bed clothing.

LAWRHNCEHFRO. Ind., May 11. A large old turkey buzzard that has been in the possession of Justice John W. Probst for several years, disappeared from his poultry yard last lull. Judge Probst supposed it had (lied. The buzzard had worn a small bell attached to its neck for many months. Sunday the justice was star'R-d by hearing a bell ringing in the top of a tree in front of his residence. He called the buzzard's name several times and was surprised to see the old bird suddenly lly down and alight on his front porch. The buzzard seemed glad to get back and looked as if it had not wintered well. Justice Probst fed the buzzard and it hopped about the poultry yard apparently satisfied to he home again.

DISCOVER HOG CHOLERA Broods Are AfYccted hi Vicinity of Rron-on, Is Report.

P.RONS' N. Mich., May 11. Hog cholera has again been discovered in this vicinity. Stock belonging to Dwight Fellows of Gilead township, have been found to be infected, and the hogs belonging to Burton Taggart, of Hronson township, are also infected. The federal veterinarians have investigated the cases and all infected hogs have been vaccinated.

BONDS ARE NOT REDUCED INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.. May 11. Judge Anderson in federal court Monday granted the Roberts group of election conspirators an unconditional writ of error, which will enable them to carry their cases to the circuit court of appeals at. Chicago without guaranteeing the costs. He refused, however, to reduce the amount of bond required for their release from Leavenworth pending the arguments at Chicago which probably will occur in October.

Daniel Doty, a farmer of Johnson county, lost a large number of chickens recently, and thinking crows were responsible for his loss, saturated a dead hen with poison and placed it near the chicken lot out of reach of the fowls. The next morning, instead of finding dead crow s, ho saw sti etched out around the poisoned hen 11 halfgrown opossums, a full-grown opossum and a full-grown red fox. lie has not lost any chickens since he poisoned the opossums.
