ShakesDeare and tho World War What Would the Greatest Poet of All Ages Write Were He Alive Today? By Elbert Hubbard
Three hundred and !ilty ycirs atfo today Sh:tkcs,' ar w;is brn. Two hundred and ninety-nine years a-; today Shuk :-j am di'-d. On April 2Z the -nut life came ami th Krcat life pas.- 1 out of :-i;;ht. It seem. a loin; tirm ao, for Shakespeare lived in the time when tho not k very ;-...J Qio -n I'. -s was heir to the throne of ner father, whu also wan not ry cd. A kind's rin va-s once interesting or not, dependin--,' upon the women oi the court. This wa.s true of tho reu'n f Henry VIII.. ami he a; opportunity for qut-t-ns second to none s.tve ohinion. Thepe women claimed the attention cf poots, urti.stH, historians, couriers and courtiers, and the world. The social and political center of interest in i:nKl tn.l in Hhakesp aru'a time vv.'lh tho kind's pa!a It was tho hotbed vlicrc tho seeds of ambition terminated, t'rew, il.v red. fruited, died. It was al.-o tho rulturo bed where vaulting ambition forced ewnts to a premature Lirth; an oarly and tragic death. Shakespeare never lived in the palace of tho kinv. yet h- knew bctnr than any one inmate could what happened thoro. Ho heard all tho servants gossip, as well as tho no less interesting sosip of tho attache of the court who tamo to the theaters. More than all and bettor than all. Shakespeare know the liuinan hoart. It ua.s 331 years a:;o today that Shakeaspeare was born. This is not the same world into which Shakespeare was ushered. Mary Anion Shakespeare had few comforts and no luxuries to 'io her babe. The first porcelain dishes wore not made until by tho Wedgwoods for Quton Tharlotte. Although Mary Queen of Scots and her cousin Klizabetn were both considered artists in their use of tho sword, ct each ate indelicately, and with tho lingers. Kvcn in kinds' palaces there wan no steam heat, no furnace lire, r.o electric ll-ht?, no h-as lights, no stovLo even for cooking. There was no steamships nor railroads, automobiles nor airships, neither telegraph nor telephones, no science, no business organization. Tho seas were imperiled Ly pirates, and the land infested with robbers. Mlirht made rteht. He was tho richest man who had the strongest nrjs-cle and tho most cunning brain. Honesty v;,s not the best policy for those who wanted success. Justice was something dreamed of by a few idealists. Kindnes:-, tenderness, patience, affection, courtesy, gentleness, were ideals far, far aw ay. It was a rude, crude, barbaric world In 1364, "a mad world, my masters." . If the thousand-sou!( d Shakrspcaro" were to come l ack today he would surely bo a stranger in this phvsical world. His own Ariel eould be a reality instead of a fairy dream. He could My through tho air, skim over ihe earth, dive under tho water and ride on tho cuil'd cboni, drink the air before him and return, or el.-e your pu!.- twice beat. Voices iu the air, illusions of beauty, everything Shakespeare told of in "The Tempest." has boon made real. The poet could do all his Ariel did, and much, much more. His portrayals of the wealth of rich men would be as painted shadows compared with the wealth of rich men today. What material this world furnishes for this master brain! What plays lie could write! What words he could male and what word pictures! How rich in color and action would be the scenes of life ho would set "between the morn of laughter and the niu'ht of tears." How his players would "body forth the false, the true, the careless shallowsami the tragic deeps of human life." What a idac for Shakespeare this w olid is now ! And although Shakespeare was lmn .""I wars ao ht would lind himself r.t home in this in v world lor one reason : He knew the human heart, its multitudinous manifestations. Man's brain has developed. Tt hns invented that which has annihilated time and .-pace. Man's brain has subdu.nl the earth to his uses. Hveryl-ody 1 i v os longer now than diil Methus. lah. And it is man's brain that has worked the miracles f the arth. Hut the human heart remains the same. Do you think it has not? Read Shakespeare. Have the i utb.re beds of "vaulting i.mbition" been removed from kinds' palaces? They hive multiplied. The reeds have been sown in other places :es well. That is all. "Vaulting ambition" is not confined to kings' palae-s. The original b d, however. b.ts never been removed. The possibilities f,,r power, world conquest, are still gieat in the palace of the king. See Europe. Then read hc play of "Muei.oth." Shakespe ire -as that "aultin-; ambition" nut Macbeth in the day of h!s sucees-. It whis'percd to him of &reat conquest. Success came .not siruly. but in battalions. And then began a sy.-tern of organ
ized espionage, preparedness for war. Shakespeare present dramatically the prores of the war hplrlt, tho trax-, bloody path to victory. He counts the cost. "It will have blood, they mv; blood will have blood." "We'd jump the life to come. But In these cases We still have judgment here: that we but teach Hloody instructions, which belnf? taught return To plague tho inventor." "Prom this moment The ery firstlings of my heart shall ne The firstlings of my hand. And even now, To crown my thoughts with acts, be it thought and done: The castle of Macduff I vill surprise. Seize upon Fife, i-'ive to the edge o' tho .sword His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls That trace him in hino line." And one soldier speaks: "Alas, poor country! Almost afraid to know thyself. It cannot He called our mother, but our grave." This was war In Shakespeare's time. How does it differ from Belgium now? "Your castle is surpris'd; your wife ami babes Savagely slaughtered." Then Macbrth's brain roaches a point where ho gives this as argument to himself: "I am in blood Stepp'd so far that, should I wade no more, Returnimr were as tedious as go o'er." Jter Macbeth said: "I have lived long enough; mv way of life Is fallen into the sear, the yellow leaf, And that which should accompany old age. As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends, I must not look to have; but, in their stead, Curses, not loud, but deep; mouthhonour, breath. Which the poor heart would fain deny, and dare not." Threo hundred years have had their entrance and their exit from the stage of time. Men and women have, each in turn, played ninny parts, and the only strange thing is that people of power have not yet learned that "vaulting ambition o'erleaps itself and falls on tho other side." War writes in letters of blood so
plain that every wayfaring should understand.
"This even-handed justice commends the Ingredients of our poison'd chalice to our own lips." What war forces to the lips of another must ultimately return, and he who forces must himself drink. Shakespeare told the whole world the story and the consequences of war. One might almost think that "all our yesterdays have lighted fools to lusty death." and will unless we learn the lesson now. "Nought's had; all's spent."
