FRENCH TROOPS HUE NOW READY

10 ASSIST FEEET

Troops Landed in Egypt and Are Now Ready to Cooperate With Ships and British Force.

PATHS, April 0. Frrn h troops arc now in Eypt ready to co-operate, ;it any point vitli the I'ritMi expeditionary force an. the allied fleet, a- rordinp to tho following annoaneement isFind Thursday nii-'ht by t lie war office: "Tho eastern expeditionary corps which was placed uml r the command of (Jen. DWmado and concentrated at Hizerta In Tunis, to perfect its organization has effected its voyage to the Levant under the most favorable conditions. It ha.s been ready since March 15 to co-operate with the allied fleets and the liriti.h expeditionary corps. "While waiting it was desirable not to prolong the stay of the troops on board the transports and for this reason the hospitality of Ktfypt, which was offered them, has been accepted. The French forces have been debarked at Alexandria and are now installed at the I'ainleh, one of the most de.sira.ble toast resorts in the delta. They arc resting here and are meanwhile improving th ir organization and cohesion. They are in a position to embark without delay for any point where their intervention may become necessary. "A review of these troops which has just been held by Gen. Imade made a highly favorable impression, upon all tho: e who witne ssed it."

LONDON, April 9. The following narrative by the otheial eye witness with the Iintitli forces was Kiven out tonight: "On Thursday last our mins scored several hits on a house sheltering the German headquarter .staff. Wounded were afterwards seen beinc tarried out. A bomb was dropped by a German aeroplane at Armentieres without damage. I Hiring the niirht hostile runs opened -p on our trenches at the left center. "Friday our trench mortars were busy with po,l effect near the roeK'sleert wood. Saturday we blew up a length of the enemy's trench lacing Guinchy. A gallery had been driven forward and in the early morning the charges were bred. The extent of the loss is not known, but pieces of timber, steel and loophole plates were hurled hiuh in the air. About 100 yards of trench was destroyed and a sniper's post at I'.rickenlields was exposed. "A Fequel to the operation was that the Germans bombarded our defenses around Guinchy very heavily for some time, pouring in over l.ooo shells of arious calibres. There was considerable sniping alon--: the center. We

According to the statemints of prisoners they are preparing a still more novel reception for Upfront parts of our line. They propose to asphyxiate our men if they advance by means of a poisonous, uas. "The as is contained under pressure in steil cylinders. Ibimr of a heavy nature it will spread alonir th ground and is not ipiii'kly dissipated. -Close to Neuve f'happello the Germans have put up this notice: " 'Hindenour is coming! Welcome to our brother! Five hundic-i thousand men weP ome their brother!' " The narrative closes with a Ionic description of the working system of the headquarters divisional staff durini; a big battle.

rilF.NFH Iti:iOKT. TA I A pril lb The following official statement was issued Thursday niuht: "In spite of persistent bad weather we attained further success last night and today between the Mouse and the Moselle. At Fes Kparjres a night attack enabled us to make another move forward and today we maintained our progress there despite three violent counter-attacks. We have already counted on the ground more than 1.00.t German corpses. "In a sharp infantry attack fought at the woods of La Morville, we wiped out one German company, leaving only 10 survivors, "whom we made prisoners. "In the woods of Ailly we carried more trenches and repulsed two counter-attacks. In the .Mortmare woods north of I'liery we gained a foothold in the enemy's defensive organization and held our ground there against all his efforts to recapture it. "Northwest of these woods at Tarns, (me of our shells cut the cable holding a German captive balloon. The balloon drifted southward in our lines. Summing up the offensive reconnaissances and attacks which we have been carrying out since April 4, between the Meuse and the Moselle, have .achieved up to the present the following results: "First, northeast and east of Verdun we hae gained ground varying from a third of a mile to a mile in depth along a front of 1 2 1-2 miles; we have occupied the heights commanding the course of the Omo and have taken the "villages of Gussanville and From zey. "Second, on the heights of the Meuse at Fes Fpargos, we have captured almost the whole of the strong position held by the enemy on the plateau dominating Combres, and we hae maintain d our ground in spite of numerous rind extremely violent counter-attacks. "Third, further south, near St. Mihiel, we have captured all the southwestern part of the woods of Ailly. where the Germans were strongly established and which they have been unable to retake by repeated counter-attac ks. "Fourth, in southern Woevre. between the Mortmare woods and the forest of L.o Pretre, we have advanced about two miles on a front live miles long and we have taken from the enemy the villages of Fey-en-Haye and Uegnieville.

'The Vampire' and Lesson it Teaches ISv Illicit Hubbard.

Walking through the gallery of statuary in the Luxembourg I saw the white, nude licrure of a man a man in all the splendid .rcnth of youth. Standing behind him on a higher part of the pedestal was the form of a woman; and this woman was leaning over, her face turned toward him, her lips a!. out to be pressed upon his, I moved closer, and beheld on the face of the youth an expression of deathly a '-Tony. The muscles of that splendid body were tense with awful pain. And in that one glance I saw that the woman's body was the body of a tigress, that on'y her face was beautiful, and that the arms ended in claws that were digging into the vitals of the man as she drew his faci to hers. Suddenly feeling the need of fresh air, 1 turned and went out upon the street. That piece of statuary cave RurneJones the suggestion for Ins paintinu-. "Tho Vampire," and supplied Kipling inspiration for his poem. Now, one mig'ht suppose from that awful sermon in stone that woman was the cause of man's undoing'. Hut for the benefit of misunderstood husbands I'll call attention to the fact that the men who have achieved most in .literature, music, painting and philosophy are men who knew from sad experience the sharpness of woman's claws Socrates, 1'ante. Shakespeare, Rousseau, Milton. Warner, Paganinin, and so many more that it would require a book to name them. Do all the "bad women" live in this quarter or that? The police do not know, for they are but the tools of that blind, blundering' thin'-,', the law; and the preachers, who conventionally bless certain things and curse others, lift an eyebrow and speak in affected, giieved surprise. Put the law of antithesis exists. The paradox lives. Life is a spiral. And possibly when all things are made plain we, who have glorified in women but a single virtue, will find that Dp Quiney was right, and that the woman who understands Is the Magdalene, who from out the purging fires of purgatory completes the circle and arises purified, spotless, recognizing deity incarnate when all others blindly fall. Man's search for love, and his need of love, have made him occasionally tho lrey. down the ages, of the selfish, cruel and designing woman. And there are beastly men, jest as there are ignolde women. Neither sex has a monopoly on depravity. Of course, we must admit that the men who have been Hayed by women have usually been greatly helped by other women, and this sometimes accounts for the Haying. Hut the point that I make is that all experience is good. The law of compensation never rests, and the stagnation of a dead-level "happy married life" may not be any more to a strong man's advantage than a

Ion-' course of stupid misunderstanding. John Milton did not L-et his freedom. His wife sat on him. silent and insensate, and so did hi r v. hole family of seven persons. Her father anal mother, her sister and brother, and all the family were there. And his sharp cry made him the butt of jibes and jeers innumerable. Milton was an obscure school teacher and chrk, but If any of those great men who sought to humiliate and defeat him are mentioned nowadays in history it is only to say, "they lived in the aire of Milton." "His life ruined by a woman!" You flatter her; she hasn't the power. And the end of the whole matter, brother, is, it doesn't much matter what your condition in life is, all things are equalized. Kven pain, grief and loss are good, if you are big enough to accept tjiem. When the prophet said, "God is good, and His mercy endureth from everlasting to everlasting-." lie rrtainly knew what he was talking about.
