Jobs Increase and Appeals Are Fewer Construction Work to Start Soon.
Warm weather has done much to relieve the labor situation in the city during the last few days. It is reported from the office of the state free employment bureau that the calls for men to do odd jobs have increased considerably and the applications for jobs have become less. Some owners of land are finding it advisable at this time to have their places cleared of stumpa while labor for such work is plentiful. The price paid ranges from 10 cents to - 5 cents a stump, and some men are finding it possible to make from tuo to three dollars a day at this work. The situation so far as the township trustee's odice is concerned has also been considerably relieved by the continued good weather conditions. There have been many calls from men who want work but there have been many fewer appeals from families in poor circumstances. Comparatively few of the mm who apply to this ottice for work can be supplied with work even though the number of odd jobs has increased during the warm weather. It is apparent in many places that it needs only the assurance of continued Rood weather to open up much work. Various contractors have their plans laid for construction work to be started as soon as there is no danger of the weather putting a stop to the work. A small force of men has been put to work on the property of the Farmers' Securities Co., Main st. and Jefferson blvd. It is said that the contract has been let for the steel work on this building, which is to bo a six-story structure, and it is expected that work can be started a3 soon as spring opens up.
DRUGGISTS AND SALOON MANAGER EACH FINED BOTH APPEAL CASES Bonis C. Kriedler, S02 S. Michigan st., was lined $25 and costs in city court Tuesday morning for the sale of intoxicants in violation of the state laws governing such sales in drug stores. Timothy Murphy, manager of Derbin's cafe and 5aloon on X. Michigan st., was fined $50 and costs for conducting a blind tiger u the cafe, which adjoins the Raloon. Tho evidence in both cases was gathered by J. II. Quilhot and his two assistants, Patrolmen Rudynski and Czenkuseh. Both cases were appealed by attorneys for the defendants. Kudynski and Czenkuseh testified in the Murphy case that, they ail Quilhot had entered the cafe after legal selling hours p.nd had ordered beer and food, and that Quilhot paid for the three orders. Attorneys for the defense attempted to show that the money paid had been in exchange for the food and not the beer, but failed to prove that to the satisfaction of tho court. Evidence in the Kriedler case was taken last Saturday afternoon. Uudynski and Czenkuseh testified in that case also, before Special Judcc Battle. Both cases were appealed.
