Josephus Daniels, secretary of the navy, will be the principal speaker at the unveiling of a preternatural monument cut from Marathon county Wisconsin granite, at Notre Dame university on Decoration day.
The extraordinary monument will be erected on the Brownson campus as soon as the weather will permit the foundation will be laid. The monument is to carry a bronze tablet cast from the metal recovered from the Fnited States battleship Maine and is in be surmounted by an eight -inch shell recovered from the illfated ship. The presentation of the monument will be more impressive to local people than was the presentation of Meagher's battle sword last year liecause a local student was on the doomed ship. In addition to the Maine trophies there will be a bronze tablet erected to the memory of George Shillington. a former student enrolled in Brownson hall, who went down with the Maine. Besides the secretary of the navy many noted speakers will be on the program as well as the heads of military organizations from all parts of the country. The cadet battalion and band will form an important feature at the exercises. The local battalions have created much comment among military men all over the country ever since the summer of 1010 when the war department of the United States appointed Cnpt. R. R. Stogsdahl as professor of military tactics in the local institution. The next year brought out such large numbers that an assistant professor a-as required and Seargent Campbell was appointed as the instructor in the riile range. Last year was the first year for the ritle team and such good -work was shown that the locals were put in a higher class. So far this year the team is making a creditable showing in class B and has equalled the scores made in the highest class.
