REJECT PLAN TO BREAK THROUGH ICE TO BEGIN SEWER CONSTRUCTION Members of four contracting firms met with Street Commissioner Layton, Mayor Keller and City Atty. Seelirt Wednesday morning for a discussion of opening sewer work in the c ity so that a certain amount of labor will be supplied for tho unemployed of the city. The suggestion made several days airo that the contractors of the four ewers to be constructed in the city allow unemployed men to break through the crust of frozen ground and ice so that the work might be started immediately, was voted down at the meeting. Instead, it was deeided to start the actual construction of the four sewers upon the first opportunity afforded by the weather. The ground is frozen for a depth of three feet in -some parts of the city along the lines of the sewers. It was said, and that condition would cause nn unnecessarily large amount of work. The first thaw, however, will cause the ground to soften. The sewers will be started then. It was said that the four sewers would require at least 73 men in their construction. Henry DoVos has the contract for the High st. ditch: Lewis Webster, one on Adams st.; Hoban and Koach. on Parry and Francis sts., and Hruno DePape, on Milton av. These four finns were represented at tho Wednesday morning meeting.
