SUBMARINE SUNK BY GEli Mil
Squadron of Warships Sighted in Pursuit Fleeing Vessels Drops Mine to Prevent Their Capture. LONDON, Nov. 4. The press bureau of the admiralty Tuesday night made the ofilcial announcement of a spectacular naval engagement which occurred Tuesday morning at a place at which tho admiralty will not yet reveal. A fequadron of German warships, sighted by a British gunboat on patrol tired cn the tcout which reported their presence to its base and a British squadron started in pursuit. The Germans lied leaving in their wake a screen of highly explosive mines, one of which was struck by a British submarine, which was sunk. The official report says: "Early Tuesday morning the enemy's squadron fired on the coast guard gunboat Halcyon while it was patroling. One man on the Halcyon was wounded. The Halcyon Immediately reported the presence of the enemy. Various efforts were made, but the light cruisers could not be brought into action before dusk. The rearmost German cruiser threw out mines and the British submarine I-3 was sunk by a mine. Two officers and two men on the bridge were saved by a gunboat which had been made available for the- support of the Belgian left flank." In connection with this report the London Star prints a dispatch from Yarmouth telling of a running naval battle in that vicinity which may or may not furnish a clew to the location of the battle officially reported by the press bureau. The admiralty will not admit that the reports concern the one battle. The Star dispatch says: "A sharp naval engagement occurred early Tuesday morning off Yarmouth. The firing was continuous for about half an hour and wan so close to the shore that the windows of the houses were shaken and hundreds of inhabitants rushed to the sea shore. "A mist hung over the sea and it was impossible to observe the number or the locality of the vessels engaged, but the flashes from the guns were plainly visible and occasionally a shell could be seen bursting in the sea, throwing up columns of water. '' ' engagement commenced off Caistor, two miles north of Yarmouth and evidently it was a running fight for the firing traveled in a southerly direction. The last firing heard at Southtown indicated that big puns were being used. One or two shells traveled landwards and were seen by watchers on the jetty to burst a distance of two miles out." The Evening News has received a dispatch stating that the German vessel Meltomene from Tocotilla with a cargo of nitrate was captured by a British cruiser off the Irish coast and towed to Queenstown. The German crew of 20 were made prisoners. LA FOLLETTE'S MAN IS A WEAK THIRD E. Ii. Phillips, Stand-pat Republican, is Klcctetl by Heavy Vote. MILWAUKEE, Wis., Nov. 4. U. ?. Sen. La Toilette's entry into the Wisconsin gubernatorial election with the independent fusion progressive candidacy of John J. Rlaine, was rewarded by a complete overthrow of all that La Follette represents in this state, Blaine running a weak third. His total vote will be about 30.000 or less than the estimated 35,000 plurality of. E. L. Philipp, stand-pat republican, over John C. Karel, democrat. La Folletto tried to elect Rlaine by a fusion of the progressives of both the old parties, who resented the primary victories of Philipp and Karel, both avowed conservatives. Gov. F. E. McGovern, whom La Follette practically opposed in the primaries for United States senator, is undoubtedly elected. The anti-Karel democrats apparently voted for Blaine and for Paul Husting, the democratic candidate for senator and La Follette's loyal supporters voted also for Blaine and Husting. The straight ticket men, however, haveapparently saved McGovern even from this combination, while Karel has fallen behind his own vote of two years ago. The socialists have probably elected Winfield It. Gaylord to congress In the fourth over W. J Carey, republican, but the republicans have gained two seats now held by democrats In the sixth and ninth districts. IT KEATJiV DOFS RELIEVE IUIKUMATTSM.
