FOURTH LECTURE
TO DRAW CROWD
"Forgiveness of Sin" Will be Subject of Father Conway's Address at High School Questions Arouse Interest.
"The Forgiveness of Sir.s" will l,e the subject this fVf-rinff of Father Omwav's lecture. th- fourth in hi.--Frips on th' F.ttholic rlmrrh. This mhjeot ;inl the question of the Catholic church ami divoref, a'-rr rdlnK to Father Conway, ar the onts which throve most interesting to the non'.itholic inquirer and invariably draw out the largest crowds. Acordinly plans are hein made this evening to accommodate a much larger crowd than on previous evenings though without excretion, the hU'h school auditorium has been tilled. The musical features this evening will be orchestral selections and a. vocal solo. "Iad Kindly LUht," by Miss Josephine I decker. The introductory remarks will be made by Prof. J. F. I lines. Interest in Questions. Infallibility as claimed by the Catholic church was tho theme of Father Conway's lecture W dnesday evening i:i the hiffh school auditorium which in spit of the rain was axain tilled. I), ll Cullfoyle presided and delixhtful musical numbers were Kiven eon-f-istln of an instrumental trio with Miss Helen cluilfoyle at the piano. Miss Wilda Shouts on the violin ami Frederic Injeroll mi the cello, and a vocal number by Mrs. J. A. Ilode. Kcardlnj; Iutim. Interest again centered on the questions which Father Conway answered previous to the lecture proper. Flsnty-six were deposited in the question boxes following the lecture Tuesday evening. In the short space of time allotted to him preceding the lecture. Father Conway was able to answer only a portion of them, postponing the others until some later time. Amonjr the most interesting asked and answered last evening were as follows: Why does the church forbid cremation? "Although." said Father Conway, "there is no intrinsic reason why cremation is unlawful ami no divine precept to bury the dead, still it is contrarv to the practice of the Jews in the old law (C.cn. XXIII. 4. Tob. II. 7-:u and the Christians under the new. In the second pi. ice it is today advocated iy modern unbelievers, who. knowinir that the Christian respect for the dead arises from the fact of the resurrection, hope by this practical method to undermine the belie. in immortalit.v. "The words 'Repent, believe and bo baptized", bein in a sermon, naturally refer to adults only. The Catholic church In our day says the self same words to the adult seeking admission into her fold. The necessity of infant baptism rests on the fact of original sin. I'very man, because of Adam's sin, is born into the world deprived of Cod's race, and of the riht of entrance into heaven, lie Is cleansed from this sin and Kiven the grace of Cod by baptism, the necessity of which is clearly set forth In the words of the Savior. 'Unless a man is born again of water .and the Holy ('host, he cannot enter the kingdom of Cod'." In his lecture on "The Catholic Church", Father Conway Fpoke in part as follows: " 'tiy the church on earth.' said a great German teacher, 'Catholics understand the visible community of believers, founded by Christ, in which, by means of an enduring apostleshlp established by Him and appointed to conduct all nations in the course of apes back to God, the works wrought by Him during His earthly life for the redemption and sanctification of mankind are, under the guidance of His spirit, continued to the end of the world.' Christ's I aw Iivim "Once you admit that Jesus Christ is God, who tame to witness infallibility to divine truth, to interpret infallibly the divine law, to pardon mn their offenses and to give men the divine life, it follows logically that the- divine teacher, legislator, pardoner and sanctitier, foreseeing the future denials that unbelievers would in the course of history utter against His gospel, would, to safeguard its content and to perpetuate it, found a visible, permanent, infallible and authoritative society. If we turn to the scriptures as a historic record of what Jesus said and did, we find clear evidence that Christ selected certain of His disciples apostles to be the teachers of His revelation, and that he conferred upon them His own divine power and authority. Ho sent them to precah His gospel to the whole world, commanding men to believe them tinder penalty of condemnation, promising to guarantee them from corruption within and attack without His fold by His ever-abiding presence and the power of the Holy Spirit. iHx Iaini Infallibility. "The churches of outside Christianity all disclaim infallibility; they speak frequently of the right of private judgment and the duty of liberty of thought. Hut unless the teacher who speaks Christ's message today speaks with a certain, infallible voice, by what ritrht df;cc it claim to represent the Christ? If the revelation it voices be simply a matter of opinion, now hard to distinguish and again hard to understand; if it may mean different things to different men and different ages, it micht as well never have been made. For the interpreter of the revelation must be as divine as the revelation itself, or it cannot command the respect or the allegiance of the thinking soul. "Tho Catholic church alone claims infallibility, and therefore, we say, alone claims the right to teach as Jesus taught authoritatively. He says to our age as Ho said to His: ' Relieve this, for it is a divine teaching; do this, for it is a divine commandment.' "There are many passages in the New Testament there are many pas sages in the fathers of early Christianity which plainly declare that there is only one church of Christ: that all its brethren are united together in a strong bond of faith, worship, government and discipline; that while heresies and schisms are certain to arise, the authors thereof are guilty of treason to Christ. 'One faith, one Lord, one baptism,' says St. Paul. To us the reformation is the sense of secession from a divine society and the forming new churches is impossible. Xo matter what may have been tho lives of Catholics, clerical or lay; no matter how lax in discipline or weak in religious power men have in their unfaithfulness become, the promise of Christ makes It clear that His society, being divine, must needs be permanent. 'The gates of hell shall not prevail against it.' Should Not Ieny Principle. "You do not destroy a city because corrupt officials rule it for a time; you do not cut down an apple tree because some rotten apples arc lying under its branches. "Private judgment is a good thing in itself, but it has no right to deny a principle, a truth, a historical fact. The common judgment of a perpetual teaching church is the divine guarantee against the errors, the prejudices, the vagaries of an uncertain, shifting
j private opinion. The papacy was the -l: '. 1 a . 1- ! n 1
uivine saieguaru acainsi scnisiu ami heresy, the eueharist the divine presence that kept the church afire with God's love. In denying both, the sixteenth century robbed the religion of Christ of its dearest treasures." The lecture tonight will he on "The "!. Sessional: It Divine Origin and Practical Working." '
