Dr. Frank of Manheim, was one of the tirst to fall in battle. JYfncli liarharities. You have probably heard of the barbaric methods used in carrying on this war. From Russia we had expected nothing else, but from the French who call themselves 'le Grande Xatione' come atrocities as horrible. Fyes of the wounded have ben couped out, nose? and ears cut off. During one of the battles some of our men came upon a wounded officer. They wanted to stay and help him but he insisted that they continue to fisht. They found him after the battle, deid from strangulation and his tonpuc cut out. "The enemy are usinc: corkscrews to police out eye" and dum dum bullets. Yes, Jim has been entering the saloon with increasing frequency here of late. His poor wife and children are destitute. The other day I saw a tragic sight. Jim had just gotten his two weeks pay and was about to enter the saloon to spend it there as he had often done before, drinking, treating and gambling. His wife with the children, huncry and ragged, were pleading with him not to do so. Her eyes, her voire, and her gesture, together with that of the children, was full of pathos. ,hurged him to go with her to the meat market, the grocery More, and thclothing store to buy the much needed food and clothing and come home ;t. happy, sober man. He hesitated. He thought of their early married life an I of the happy days when they had plenty to eat and wear and some to lay by for a rainy day. He remembered the time he spent but five or ten cents .t week for booze and then how the appetite for alcohol had thrown upon him until he. could not now resist Its craving. He madly tore himself from her, leaving her to return heart-broken, with tho poor children hungry and ragged, to a cold, empty home. I have often thought how many homes like this are wrecked by drink: how much meat, proceries and clothing have never been bought or bein? bought have not been paid for because the wage earner spends his money la the saloon.
