Working, watchlfu:; praying and surTcrin. are necssary in wnpintr the hutth' of the Christian life. Vhave to deny our appetites many thinu's for which they clarnor; our lower natures must he subordinated to our higher interests. It means s-elf denial f the strictest kinl if we would exalt our spiritual natures, and enjoy the experience of victory which comes onl to those who make a succe of the liff and work which fiod ha.s trivcti them. Jesus told his disciples to take up their cross daily and follow him: thus it is only possible to he his loyal followers when we do It hy the way of ulv.iry. il. Wo niut r-dt temptation or oo our crown. The temptations which stand in our way are numerous ami frequently very tierce. There are the temptations that come from our own body, the temptation to selfishness, to pride, to cowardice; all the.-e ami all other temptations which are included in the scriptural words, from "the world, to llesh and the devil" are to he vanquished. If we al
low ourselves to be overcome bv these
we make shipwreck at faith
tinalby lose our crown of glory
would appear from general oberva-
iion and scripture, that those who have the richest Christian experiences here, and who occupy the highest seats In heaven are those who have been most fiercely tempted. John in the seventh chapter of the Revelation tells us of a group of people In heaven who seemed to be enjoying themselves more than tin: other angels; they were clothed with white robes and had palms In their hands: "And cried with a loud voice, saying salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb . . . Messing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, ami might, be unto our God
forever and ever." And in answer to
a question from John, one of the elders in the heavenly city said to him. "These are they which came out of great tribulation and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Liinli." I. V art more than a match for all the? forrt's against us. When v are told to "hold fast", or to "watch
and pray" in order to conserve the experience we have, and attain to lh highest altitudes of the Christian life, it implies that we are aide to do so C.o.l never commands the impossible It is true that the lierce temptations of life are too much for mere men, but when we realize the fact that the holy spirit dwells in the hearts of all believers, we can then see that we are more than a match for all the enemies against us. and If they were lo times as strong and numerous, we could still have the victory. Xo man fails in the Christian life because he (ould not succeed, bu"t always because he would not take the proper steps to victory. "It is not by might nor by power", after a human sort, which gives us victory in the Christian life, but by the spirit of CJod who dwells in ur hearts. If therefore, we will watch and pray, and do the common duties of life as we come to them and exercise faith in Cod. we are sure to retain the crown of life which the Lord has placed upon our heads. Remember, "Ho that is for us is more than all that are against us.'
