LAPORTE. Frank Crai of Lacrosse, Wis., a former suitor, is alleged to have shot Miss Gusta Newman in the back as she was driving in a buggy with a succesful rival. The back of the buggy seat and a coat which Miss Newman had rolled up and placed behind her, served to impede the bullet, and the wound inflicted while painful wras not serious.

LAPORTE. Stanley Dembowski had a narrow escape from death here when he was 5truck y a train while walking along the Iake Shore tracks. He suffered a compound fracture of the elbow joint.

KALAMAZOO. A. L. Loveland. 16. has lost the sight of both eyes as the result of the premature explosion of a Fourth of July cannon. He had loaded it to fire early in the morning and struck a match to examine it. A spark from the match fell into the touch-hole as he was examining the muzzle. His face was burned to a crisp.

GOSHEN, Ind.. July 7. The grand jury here is investigating the death of Mrs. Eli Miller, a gypsy woman who was shot to death during the progress of a camp brawl west of the city a few days ago.
