GREATEST ENE Strong Drink the Biggest Problem Christianity Has to Face According to Rev. James L Gardiner. At Ft. Paul's church Sunday morniny. Kev. Janu-.s (Sardiner spoke on "True Patriotism." His evening sermon was on "What Is Christianity's (Irratrst FnoV" In preparation for this sfrmnn Tin v. Gardiner asked 150 men that question. This ff-rmon was the second that ha. fcfen delivered on questions asked of members of the congregation. "kStronpr drink is undeniably the preatrst foe of Christianity. It is the greatf-st cur.se of christian civilization; for strange though it may poem nevertheless it Is true, that intemperance is the marked vice of our socalled christian civilization. The lrink problem is financially, socially, morally yes and politically the most important problem that today confront? the American nation. "The saloon, where strong drink is sold, either by sanction of law or as is frequently the case, in violation of the law is to my mind the worst inMitution on the face of the earth. I have studied the saloon for 13 years and I cannot find about it one redeemins quality. "The liquor traffic is the greatest foe of christianii.y because it is the greatest enemy ot man. It is the enemy of man's body. It is not necessary for me to ar'ic t.'iis question as all credible doctors ar; a unit in declaring that strong drink destroys that tissue which gives strength to the body. Jt Is the enemy of man's brain as no man can do his best thinking whose hrain is beclouded by intoxicating liquors. It is the enemy of man's Mul. The drunkard cannot walk in communion with a holy God. Drink ;rratt Ilncmy. "Strong drink is the greatest enemy of Christianity because it strikes a damper deep into the peace and happiness of the home. There is nothing in the world so beautiful and innocent as children, yet how often their young lives are blurred and blasted by the saloon. We build the school to educate them; wo, build the church where they may be spiritually trained; then we licence the saloon to blast and ruin their lives. "Hie liquor traffic Is the greatest enemy of the state. Think of the criminals, of the insane, of the paupers, who are made such by strong drink, and who must then be taken care of by the state. The saloon is moveover, frequently a violator of law and thus an enemy to the wfarc and happiness of the state. "The liquor traffic Is the enemy of commercial prosperity. Nearly all other trades aro in eeeming brotherhood except this one. It is the one great exception. The success of the .saloon means the ruination of other trades. The grocer, the butcher .and the tailor find poor customers in the drunkard's family and the state gets jt tax receiver instead of a tax payer. "The saloon is the greatest foe of the church of Jesus Christ. The church i the only institution on the face of the earth, which has for its object the spreading of the gospel of Christ throughout the world." KERN DENIES HE IS TO BE NEXT CANDIDATE Has No Knowledge That His .Friends ' Aro Ircraring to I loom . Him In 1910. WASHINGTON. July G. Sen. John "U". CARNEGIE ATTACKED BY BISHOP CHANDLER
Republic Is Threatened by Powerful Commission Which SeeL to Control College. ATLANTA, Ga.. July 6. A bitter attack on the Carnegie and Rockefeller educational board was made Sunday by Ilishop Ccndler of the Southern Methodist Kplscopal church. "The republic is threatened by a powerful commission to create and control a chain of colleges in no wise responsible to the people through the authority of a state or church," said the bishop. "The apologists and defenders of this scheme delight to call these institutions independent and free. No term less appropriate could bo applied to these schools. They are as dependent as mendicants upon the dollars of these boards. "It Is time for the people to be aroused to the danger of Institutions which aro utterly and defiantly irresponsible to them and wholly dependent upon men who deliberately and avowedly propose to control all education in America" CHOICE FOR RESERVE BOARD AT CAPITAL Thomas I). MAKES PLEA FOR VOTES FOR WOMEN Present Arrangement i in Violation of Independence, Says Rev. II. Li. Davis. A blow for woman ?uffrage was struck yesterday morning by Rev. Henry L. Davis in his sermon "Paying Tribute to Ceasar." , The right of woman suffrage he said is an obligation that every christian owes to the equality of rights as set ?orth in the Declaration of Independence. "The refusal of woman suffrage is a relic of the barbaric ages," he said. "The last stand is being made against it now but it is a weak stand. The argument that going to the ballot box will injure a woman's sphere in the home is all wrong. It will not hurt her. And if it does the argument is one in favor of it. If the ballot box is a bad place for a woman to go better change the ballot box and voting system. The refusal to give the woman the right to vote is a denial of the abrogation of the Declaration of Independence." Rev. Mr. Davis also urged the passage of the Hobson anti-saloon bill. Favorable action by congress on the measure he said would be the first step in the right direction. Although it would necessitate a favorable vote of two-thirds of the states to make it a constitutional amendment. he believed that this would come in time. He asserted that this would be comparatively easy once congress passed fau vorably upon the bill. ARMY TO PREPARE CAMP Kelly's Rand Not Likely to Work Any This Summer. WASHINGTON, July 6. Gen. No More Unsightly Superfluous Hairs (Helps to Beauty) Women who prize a clear, hairless skin will be greatly interested in the new and harmless treatment employed by many society favorites for keeping the face, neck and arms free from unsightly hairy growths. This is essentially a home-treatment, requires little time and any woman can use it without hesitation, because satisfactory results are sure to follow. To remove the objectionable hair or fuzz, a thick paste is made with some powdered delntone and water, then spread upon the hairy surface. After 2 or 3 minutes it is rubbed off, the skin washed and the hairs are gone. No pain or inconvenience attends this method of banishing hairs and excepting where the growth is unusually stubborn, a single application is sufficient, but to be certain about the delatone, buy it from your druggist in an original package.
