WHEAT CROP OF ST. JOE coin TO BE BIG ON
County Agent Estimates Figures Will be Greatly in Excess of 187,531, Last Years Yield.
Farmers in St. Joseph county will have plenty of money with which to buy autos and new thincs if everything from which they derive revenue Kives them a Rood returns as it is indicated the crops will (1. For the crops this year, in everything but apples and pears, promise to be record breakers, according to County Agent John S. Bordner. Wheat will be the bumper crop or the vear, and promises to surpass last year's yield, when 11,193 acres produced 18 7.:) 31 bushels. Considerable more wheat has been sown this year than last, and the harvest should be greater, unless the heavy rains of the past week or so continue. Wheat, after it is cut. must be kept dry, and rain during the cutting reason, now on, greatly hampers the work of the farmers. Xot all the yield will be of the best, for some of the seed was sown on poor ground, where it stools, or grows very slowly, and the Hessian fly, a deadly enemy of wheat, gets In between the young shoots and the main stalk and kills them off. If the crop Is planted on .good ground, the nourishment given by the soil generates power in the roots and they send new shoots around the ones that have been killed. Alfalfa Yield Heavy. Rivaling wheat, in the matter of yield, is alfalfa. This crop has only been sown in about 500 acres but will bo the heaviest by one-half of any crop ever produced in this county. Many acres will produce from two to two and one-half tons of alfalfa per acre. Alfalfa gives two crops a year, and the second crop this year is well under way, many of the plants being over six inches high. Some of the crop will be cut this week but the big harvest will not take place until the middle or latter part of July. Corn, which suffered greatly from the excessive draught last year, gives every indication of producing many bushels this year. Unless a blistering heat should persist. Apples Will be Soaree. Apples, the fruit which everybody loves, will be scarce this year, as also will pears. Both of these fruits, which during the blossoming season gave every indication of a bountiful yield, have been struck by "pear blight," a disease which kills the trees and the fruit. Of the lesser crops, clover points to bo about the strongest, as most of the seed sown in spring was put in good favorable ground, from which the lime had not been taken. Rank
ing with clover, in largeness of yield, are soy beans and cow peas, which city folks are apt to know little about but which are important to the farmer who must have feed for his cattle during the winter. These crops will be unusually barge this year. Oats Makes Pair Showing. Oats will make only a fair showing this year on account of the small acreage, as most of the land is used Tor the other crops. All of the Kankakee crops will be greater this year than last year, as the rains have helped their growth wonderfully. The trouble seems to be in getting harvest hands, although the farmers in this locality do not expect as much trouble as the great wheat producers in the west, where it is said the eastern men, who go there to harvest, soon tire of the excessive heat and leave the growers with little ceremony. Home grown cabbage is being brouuht into town by the producers and according to reports th crop this year will be much heavier than usual. Cabbage will sell at three cents a pound. They will weigh from three to 15 pounds. (ootl Potato Crop. Harden truck over the county is much better than in other counties. Potatoes are said to promise one of the largest crops while in numbers of other counties the crop has been an entire failure. Reports are that the price, which lias alreadv been boosted ten cents a bushel, will jump higher in the near future- and continue to climb. Plans are being made by local farmers to ship potatoes to dealers at Detroit and Michigan cities. Extreme hot weather in the southern part of the state, in lower as well as the Petoski potato raising district in Michigan, has practically burned up the crop, it is said. That the tomato crop will be the largest ever raised, at least in this county, was the report of the farmers who say the stand is perfect. Strawberries proved a big money getter for the farmer this year, in many cases the crop bringing in $10 to the acre. Other berries teem to have a similar good showing.

"National Prohibition" was the subect of Rev. U. R. Hostetter's sermon Sunday morning at the Westminster Presbyterian church. In his talk to his congregation. Rev. Hostetter traced the history of prohibition from its beginning in Maine to the present time. "The American people are constants moving forward.' said Rev. Hostetter, "and the time is coming when the entire country will rise up and ask for nation-wide prohibition. We are -coming to realize the great economic waste as well as the moral waste. "Everywhere we see that Americans are moving and awakening to the downfalls of orominent men which
are caused by drink. Great calamities ', of the present time have been caused
by liquor. This drink habit has come to be one of the greatest American handicaps t.nd burden?. "Maine h.s had prohibition for 63 years. Kansas has had it for about as long. There are now ten states that have had prohibitory legislation. West Virginia will become a dry state on next Wednesday, July 1. All of these states have become dry because the great tide of public sentiment has turned against the liquor trafhe. "Over 42 million of the total population of the United States is in dry territory. Two-thirds of the territory owned by the United States is dry and half of the population is living in dry territory. "The great crisis is now on. There will be a resolution put before congress on next Wednesday and it will probably come to a vote on the the following Tuesday. We should now avail ourselves of the opportunity and carry out the slogan that was formed severa vears ago, 'Make America a dry country by 1920.' " In the evening Rev. Hostetter took as his subject. "Follow Me." In his sermon he pointed out that by following Christ persons would live lives of faith, obedience, communion with God. service and finally they would come to the eternal life.

To be strong and manly is the aim of every man, and yet bowmany we find who are wasting the vitality and strength which nature gives them. Instead of developing into the strong, vigorous, manly men that nature intended them to be, they find themselves broken down, and despondent no ambition to do anything. They struggle aimlessly-along, sooner or later to become victims of dreaded disorders, their finer sensibilities blunted and their nerves shattered.
