For several moments Helen Flood heMtatinp before the 'jhono. then determinedly took dfiwn the receiver. "SI 60 Schuyler . . . I'd like to ?Pak to Mb-s Ford. . . . Oh. I'm so plad you're In! Am you doins anything special? Can't you come over a littlo while? . . . Yen, I'm all alone. Warren had Mr. Tracey here to dinner, but they left ripht afterward some committee meeting. I don't know when I t-vfr felt so restless. 1 can't Fettle down to sx?w or if-ml or anything! . . . Oh. I'm so t-orry! .... No, I'm afraid I couldn't . . . Well, wait: I'll see v.-hat tim it is." H l n darted to the library to plaru at the clock. "It's ten minutes after cipht. But Mjpposo Warren should pet back before I do? W.aJt, let me think Yes, I could do that all right," Impulsively. T11 come! Hflcn never went out in the evening without Warren, and so, as she hurriedly slipped into her wraps, it Ff-emed like a daring: adventure. For fear that he mipht como back unexje tdly early, she pinned a note on the lamp shade In the "hall. "Dear. I've pone over to Evelyn Ford's at the liellcourt. Will be I -ark by half-past ten." Helen almost ran alonp the dark Ftreet to the car line. A moment later she' was in a car crowded with theatergoers. All the other women
had escorts only sho was alone and Fhe left painfully conspicuous. It va.s with a feelinp (t relief that she finally ran up the steps of the Bellcourt an uptown apartment hotel. "You can po ripht up. Miss Ford's rxpectinp you," the clerk informed her. Another Visitor. To Helen's surprise Kvelyn was not alone. A younp woman in a clinpinp Mak evening1 gown, whom she introdmd as Mrs. Chilton, was with her. "My rooms are Just down the hall from Miss Ford's, but I think I'm in Iuto most of the time," she laughed. "An apartment hotel can be so lonely, and my husband h.us been away two months." Mrs. Chilton was a southerner, with a soft, drawling voice, a certain languid charm, and a desire to talk incessantly of "my husband". '"He's never been away so long before." she informed Helen naively. Then glaring at a tiny bracelet watch. "ili, it's almost time for him to call mo up I forgot to say I'd be in here. She swept over to the telephone and instrueted the operator to call her in liss Ford's room. "lint I thought you Just said your husband was in Detroit," exclaimed Jlelen bewildered. "Oh ye, but he calls me up on long

distance about this time every evening. I'd be so worried if he didn't." "But isn't that very expensive?" Helen could not help but ask. "Yes, it means four dollars for the first three minutes and I almost always talk longer. I know its extraval gant, and we really can't afford it, but I simply have to hear from him once a day." Helen made no further comment, but sho could not help but wonder at the devotion of a husband who every nlpht would telephone from Detroit to New York. Sho remembered the time sho was at her mother's in Missouri and had not heard from Warren for two weeks. Almost in desperation she had called him up one ni&ht on a long: distance 'phone. And ho had been furious "had roared at her for doing1 such a senseless extravagant thing. Yet this man telephoned his wife from Detroit every night. It was a littlo after 9 when the phone rang. Mrs. Chilton sprang up with an excite!: "There he is now! Tell her to connect me in my room! I'll bo there In a moment!" And she dashed out down the hall. "She's perfectly wild about him," smiled Evelyn indulgently, when she had told the telephone frlrl that Mrs. Chilton was now in her room, and had closed the hall door, which "She had left open In her haste. "Does he really call her up every night?" asked Helen, unbelieving.
"Yes. I don't think he ever misses. She gets a letter from him every day too and they've been married almost five years." Why waa this woman so loved? wondered Helen. She was pretty and charming In her languid, clinging way, but what had she to give to receive such devotion" There waa a knawlng envy In Helen's heart. All her life she had so yearned for love yet how little had been given her. Evelyn talked on of other things, but Helen's thoughts were with Mrs. Chilton and of her priceless possession of such a love. In a few moments there was a knock at the door and a laughing "Can I come In again?" It was Mrs. Chilton, radiantly happy. "He says he expects to start back In two weeks. I just had to come tell you. Now won't you all come in my room and have a glass of sherry and some fruit cake some that was sent from home Christmas?" "Id love to, but I must go. I simply ran away," exlaimed Helen, "and must get back before Mr. Curtis." "But you left word where you were going, didn't you?" asked Evelyn. "Oh yes, but I want to get back first. I never go anywhere at night." "Surely you'll wait until he comes for you." exclaimed Mrs. Chilton. The idea of having Warren come for her had not even occurred to Helen. How could sho make a pampered, petted idolized woman like Mrs. Chilton understand that her husband would not think of coming for her. "Oh no, I wouldn't want him to come. He'll be so tired there'd be no use of his coming 'way up here." "Why of course, he'll WANT to como. You don't think he'd want you to go home alone!" insisted Mrs. Chilton. Helen hesitated. It was really only a quarter of 10, and she felt sure Warren would not get home until after 11, so sho consented to stay a few moments longer. Mrs. Chilton Insisted on 'phoning down to the office to say that Mrs. Curtis was in her room, in case any
one called for her. But Helen knew only too well that there would be no call. The sherry and fruit cake were delicious, and Mrs. Chilton with her dainty belongings had made her hotel room most attractive. But a quarter after 10, In spite of their protests and assertions that Mr. Curtis would soon be after her, Helen broke away. All the way homo in the car Helen's thoughts were still of Mrs. Chilton and the love her husband gave her. How could there bo an unhappy moment in her life? What difference could anything else make as long as she had a love like that? What must it mean to have some one care enough to telephone half across the continent every night? "Has Mr. Curtis come yet," she asked anxiously of the elevator boy. "Why yes, ma'am, and he's gone out again." "Gone out again." in astonishment. "Didn't he leave any word?" "No ma'am, but I guess he's gone after you." Helen's lingers trembled with excitement as she unlocked the door. She rain straight to Maggie's room. A liffht shone through her transom. "Maggie," she called, "did you see Mr. Curtis when he came in? Did he
leave any word with you?"

In. her flannel wrapper. "I heard him come In .and go out. but he didn't say nothing. T guess he went after you. It's tco bad he missed you." The note Helen had pinned on the hall lamp shade was gone. So ho had read it and started after her! He did care! A thrill of joy swept through her. He could not- bear to have her coming home so late alone. IVrhaps all the time he cared more than she knew. There were men like that, whose instinct was to hide every expression of sentiment. If only she could learn to believe that there was real tenderness behind his gruff indifference. She had tried to believe this before but she would believe it now. She had not dreamt of him coming after her. Surely there was proof of his love and anxiety! Hy the front window she watches for hkm her eyes full of tenderness. She wa. full of self-reproaches, too. that because of her he had gone out again when he was probably very tired. Rut she would make up for it she would be very tender and lovinp! When at length she heard his key in the door, she flew out to the hall and threw her arms about him as he shrugged out of his overcoat. "Oh. dear dear I'm so sorry! I'll never ro out like that apaln! And to think of your having that long trip up there for nothing!" "What under the s-m are you talking about? Here let me get out of this overcoat." "Did you see I-Tvelyn.' excitedly. "They begged me to stay. A Mrs. Chilton was there and they both f:ald .vou'd come after me but I never dreamt of such a thing!" "What's the matter gone nutty. Haven't the least idea what you are driving at." "Why why Warren." stammerlngly. "didn't vou cro tr the TJellcourt
