CiriCAOO. June IS. The 12th biennial convention of the General Federation of Women's club was ollicially closed Tuesday night. Thursday several conferences and sightseeing trips will bo enjoyed by the delegates. Mrs. Percy V. I'ennybacker, reelected president of the federation for the coming two years, talked Wednesday of the work of the convention and of the federation's tuture. "This has been the finest convention I believe, ever held by the federation." fhe Mid. "Kverything has i-ecn ideal. WASHINGTON. June 18. The proposed rate of 1 cents per hundred pounds on lumber from Alabama points to Knoxville. Tenn., over the Southern railroad Wednesday was declared reasonable by the interstate commerce commission. The increase is permitted only on the Mobile division. A rate not exceeding 12 cents per hundred pounds from Decatur, Ala., to Knoxville. and not exceeding 13 cents per hundred pounds from Sheffield, Ala., to Knoxville. was prescribed by the commission. The Knoxville traftic bureau opposed the increase.

The axe fell in every grade of employes, and every division. The commissioner gave the failure of congress to make adequate appropriations as the reason for the wholesale dismissals.
