Tho Metropolitan Underground railway is flooded and traffic has been suspended. (.las mains, telephone wires and tho electrical supply have been cut off. Policemen armed with powerful lamps have isolated the affected districts and are now exploring th sunken streets for bodies. Hie most herious cave-in occurred in ho Place i-t. Philippe Du Koule at tho junction of the Hue La Poetie and the Faubourg Sr. Ilonore. When the storm was at its "height a sharp rending sound was heard in this quarter. Suites wn.s more than twice as great us in all the rest of Christendom : yes, actually more than two times as many divorces among 73,000,000 Americans that year as among the 4 00.00,000 souls of Europe and other Christian countries." Senator Kansdell showed that divorce and the evils to which it gave birth were important factors in the ultimate destruction cf Imperial J tome. He drew a striking parallel between our own country and the empire of the Caesars, and raised his voice in denunciation of the rapid spread of the divorce evil in the United States, and of our very lax divorce laws. "Our marriage and divorce laws," said Senator Rar.sdell, "ore framed according to the whim of the legislators of each individual state, and the result i.-i a veritable patchwork, which rur.s the gamut of matrimonial delinquencies from that of South Carolina, which grants no divorce, and .NVw York, which grants divorce for adultery only, to that of the State of Washington, which permits absolute divorce for "any cause deemed by the court sufficient." He paid a high tribute, to the press of the country, but ald that he deeply regretted to see so many of our great dailies Haunting the most intimate details of divorce cases on thi:r front pages. "Tremendous is the power of the press," continued Senator Kansdell. "and er.;tt is its responsibility. I beg of the papers, and of you, young gentlemen, graduates of the school of Journalism, who are on the threshold of your chosen career, to bear in mind that you will be held responsible before the Uternal Judge for the least scandal given to one of his little ones. The true model for you and every writer in our papers should be such material only as you would be willing for your daughters, jour sisters, your sweetheart, your wife, your mother to read. You should never 'print anything that you would be ashamed to bring into tho sacred precincts of your home, to read to your own dear loved ones. .Medals Awarded. "Hear In mind that you are responsible for any scandal to which you unjustly give circulation, and yours is the duty of helping the publie to a rijjht understanding of the things of interest. And to the readers of newspapers I say it is your work to force the press to be clean, to be hone.n find to he moral, for a moral reading public can force the press to be moral." To Michael S. Pecker. A.Ii. 14. of Louisiana, was awarded the Quam medal for excellence' in the elasi(s. The Meehan medal for the best English essay was merited by Martin E. Walter. Ph. Ti. '14. of Mt. of the streets along with the demoralized telephone and telegraph systems ha paralyzed whole districts where unknown ravages doubtless have been made, by the storm. A few of the suburbs have reported catastrophes and great damage. Xothin like the violence of the storm has ever been known in Paris. In addition to tlie Hoods which have destroyed life and property, the lightning was terrific. Several persons were killed in the streets and in their homes-. At Choisy. one of the suburbs, three were killed and ten injured icy lightning. Troop Sent Out. As soon as he was informed of the extent of the damage Pres. Poincare sent out a member of his military household to reconnoitre. Troops, police and firemen are in charpe of the territories in which the storm's ravages have been the greatest. Late Monday evening the situation was becoming more serious. New collapses have been reported covering larger areas. The inky darkness of the sinking neighborhoods have added to the terror of the imprisoned inhabitants. Citizens have been cautioned against lighting lamps in their houses for fear of gas frcm tlie wrecked main.'?. Troops have been thrown around the St. Augustine quarter and it is planned to venture into the sunken streets as soon as possible to look for bodies. The flooded subways and sewers, it is believed, have caught most of the victims drawn down by cave-ins earlier in th evening. Theaters Closed. Theaters and cafes, deserted early in the evening, are tilled with crowds seeking news of the disaster caused b;- the storm. Many of the amusement places have installed bulletin boards. Announcers give out reports from various suburbs and the districts cut off by the moats created by the landslides. The greatest loss of life is believed to be in the St. Lazare district, although the danger from tire threatens continually and increases as persons rendered reckless by rumors of ne.v engulfed districts, "attempt to gather up valuables and escape by lantern light along the margins of the sunken streets.
