HAMMOND POLICE SEEK GANG OF AUTO JOKERS

HAMMOND. Ind.. June 1 J. The authorities here and at tlary today instituted a search for jokers whose art have caused many women autoists to become seriously ill. According to the police the jokers have placed dummies on secluded dark roads, and when the auiomobilists would hit the obstruction, a man hidden in the bushes would scream that a man had been killed. Several women have been made periously ill by the shock and the authorities have organized patrols in many places to capture the jokers.

but our men were their shooting was

might have been. Major Metcalf saw one man bring

down a fleeing Filipino by hurling hioj

rifle at him with both hands, muzzle first. The bayonet passed entirely through the man's skull. The bottom ) of the trench was a shocking spec-, tacle, being simply covered with dead

and wounded men, the most of whom had been brought down in the brief fire fight at close range that had preceded the final rush. There was a moment's delay after the church was reached. The field and staff ofllcers remounted their horses, that had been brought up in the rear of tho line, and the irregular and waving line of 1,000 yelling men pushed through the burning town in pursuit. We were soon in the open country, but the fleet-footed Filipinos had several hundred yards the start of us, and we did not bring down many of them, the excitement of the chase and the exhaustion of the men not being conducive to good shooting. Occasionally a ktoup would turn and fire on us for a few seconds; but most of their efforts were bent on placing the Tulejan river between themselves and our line We chased them to the summit of the ridge overlooking that stream, about half a mile beyond Caloocan, and then halted, being far beyond where we had been directed to establish our new line. The dusk was now gathering, but across the river, near Malinta, we would see long lines of the enemy, some of whom opened on us with a rather sharp but quite ineffective fire, the distance being about 1,200 yards. We did not at first reply, but finally Captain Orwig of his own initiative betran volley firing with hi company. I rode over to his position and pitched into him rather savaerely, in tho hearing of his men, telling him that we could not hit anybody with our old Springflelds at that distance and that the fire of the enemy could do us no harm.

The horse, a fine little bay of the better type of Filipino pony, sure-footed and indifferent to the noise of tiring, completely recovered in time, and I rode him through all of the campaign up the railroad. Considering the heavy fire, that we had been under, especially while tne r i lit flank of the regiment wat engasin' the trenches near the church, our losses had. been small, consisting of two enlisted men killed and Captain Christy and eicht enlisted men wounded. The next morning we counted 04 insurgent dead, mostly in the tranches near the church or their vicinity. Th ir wounded who had been left on the cround we gathered up and sent in to the hospital with our own. About 1 0 rifles and several thousand rounds of a ti. munition were captured and destroyed.
