There wan jollification at the Lincoln. Highway association headquarters, at the Lincoln garage, long before the count was all in despite the Idueness that prevailed about noon. It was known at that time that thoae four precincts In the west end were combatting the proposition, and fears were, entertained that unless the downtown district got busy, the day mlrht be lost. proved beyond defeat. The association election committee, consisting of M. L. William. John F. Russell and George A. Crane, were kept busy all day managing a brigade of automobiles used to carry the sick, aged and maimed to the voting" places and are entitled to great credit for their efficient work. Must Wait for Pay. Tho election boards, however, will have to wait thi3 time for a couple months beforo they can collect pay for their day's work. This was announced Thursday night when they turned in their certificate and deposited the ballot boxes. Bids must be advertised for and the contract let. and bonds fold to cover the road building, and all Incidental expenses leading up thereto, including the employment of a superintendent to see that tho work is properly done, before any bills can be paid. The bid accepted must not exceed $192,000 for the job, which, plus the cost of the election, of viewers, enrrineers, a superintendent, etc. will be tho amount of the bonds. The election will cost the voting districts involved approximately $1.023 an average of $.13 per precinct, including the election board, voting place, meals and printing of ballots. Tho bonds will draw 4 1-2 per cent. It Is expected that work on tho road will begin shortly after the prantlns of contract. A ready market for the bonds Is afsured. The strip is 11 miles in length, extending from tho end of the Michigan av. pavement through Portage, German. Warren and Olive townships to the Laporte county line, where it will be taken up by Laport county and extended on to Porter. Meanwhile the road will also be proceeding eastward through Penn township to Klkhart county, thrmgh Elkhart, and so on, east to Toledo, etc. The Penn township road was not Involved in Thursday's voting, being a strip of le.?s than four miles. Where OpixJtlon Lay. Through the second, third and fourth precincts of the sixth ward and tho third of the third, in the Fame vicinity, are the ones that went against the highway, the first precinct of the sixth, gave the project Its largest majority. 19 9. The total vote of this precinct wus 231. This was at 405 S. Chapln st. Two blocks farther down the street, at 8u5, they were voting the other way.

German township went against the

road by one vote and Warren by 17. Olive did splendidly the other way. It Is said that the village of New Carlisle voted solid for the road. Resort keepers at Hudson lake alo worked hard for the project. Fear that the undertaking would Increase taxes is s;ud to be responsible for the "no" vote. Sonvbody spread the story that it would mean a tax Increase of approximately 4 0 per cent, while In fact, it will only be a fraction of one per cent.
