SOUTH BEND BUILDING j INCREASES AS OTHER ! CITIES SHOW A LOSS! i As comfarl with other lirst-cla.ss j
citie of the United states. South Hend building operations during the Iirst four months show a favorable increase over the same period a year Duiing the first four months an increase of 1G pT cent was Fhown. Due to the fart that the First M. K. church oflicla!. took out a permit for the erection of the new edifice on N Main St.. at a tost of approximately I'J'KOQi) last year, the April results for this year did not nhow an increase and this had considerable to do with lowering tbe total increase. 1'or the four months permits to erTt J-.".S50 were taken out. A year nuo the Jisure for the same period was $255.070. Numerically ioore cities y ho wed lo.-ses in their April statements of building operations than showed ains, though the excess ia not Kreat. The larger cities were among the lossers and the results fhow n distinct losa. The total building permits issued in all the cities ior the month of April aursn-Kates more than $ Of,. 000.000 as compared with 10,000.000 a year ago. There ia an honor roll thi.s month, though not as long as usual. Dayton make a phenomenal gain because of the prostration last year due to the flood, and Ft. Wayne" hows a era in of 7." per cent. The total building permits issued in all the cities for the four months also shows a small loss. This year it aggregated $22::. 427 .307 and last year it was $233,324,467.

izing company on Vistula av.. is lying at the "t. Joseph hospital suffering serious burns received yesterday afternoon in an explosion in his garage. Although Ills condition is not considered Ferious he is suffering intensely from burns about the face, head and hands. Stewart was repairing a motor boat gasoline tank and was using a blow torch while soldering. It appears that fumes from the interior of the boat tank escaped and were ignited by the blow torch flame. The tank was demolished in the explosion.
Ir. C. H. Crumpacker stated that'
unless mood poisoning developed Stewart's burns will not prove fatal. BIOLOGY PICNIC IS' HELD DESPITE RAIN rjreat Is the love of picnic among the nifmiors cf the Hiology club of the high school. Despite a steady downpor.r of rain over .0 members boarded the special car which left the hih school building at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon on their annual picnic to Hudson lake. The foresight of the committee on arrangements headed by Raymond Phillips which planned the program In event of a rainy day, permitted tho earning out of the entire schedule of events. Games and exploring trips occupied tho attention of the bug hunters during the afternoon and evening and they returned at 8 o'clock. The affair was planned as a farewell to Miss Cunningham, the instructor in biolc'gy and sponsor of the club.
