5HIPAREHESG Second Life Boat With 14 More of Crew is Picked Up By Steamer Manhattan Franconia Rescues Thirteen. HALIFAX. .V. May c,. Nfv of tlr savin;? of Captain MoIo!iaM .'Mid his men by t li Manhattan was rT-ivfil hi today in a wireless mo.-'.i-f by way of Sable island. Th- following I the message: "Manhattan pi'-ked up one boat of Columbian, eaptain and thirteen others. One enu'iner kill 1 in explosion and ont- man drowned leaving ship. Manhattan .'-till earchir.tf for other ix.at." When this mevsno was received there had still been no word of the lifeboat containing If men mentioned by surivors on the Kraneonia. Tlie Manhattan made her rescue In 11:11 north latitude and l',o west longitude. 'Hie Manhattan is bound from New York to Antwerp, consequently she will land her quota of survivors on the th-r .-ide. The 1-Yanronia was due in Hoston to:lay but she was expected to be delayed because f her search for other Columbian survivors after picking up the first boatful. The Columbian was bound from Antwerp for New York with a heavy raro of freight, and was about -Oo rnile. south of Cape Race when fire was discovered in her hold. Considerable of her carjro was inllammable and :he tlames spread rapidly through the hull. There was an explosion in the Columbian's caro on .Sunday niirht, an .xplosion which must have completely wrecked the ship and set her 30 completely atire that she was abandoned very shortly afterward. no despairin;,' call for help was sent out by her wireless. .Sable island caught a messagj from her: Calls Tor Help. "We are afire, hurry help." Then before the name of the ship ?r her position could be given, the tireless was disabled and communication ceased. The blazing wreck was sighted by the steamer Seydlitz Monday, which jent out a general call for assistance ind one of the ships which responded to it was the Franeonia which ;ruis"d east of Sable island searching for boats. The. search had nearly been abandoned Tuesday when the Franeonia ishtcd one craft. The 1.S00 passongcrs on hoard the Cunarder crowded to the rails as their ship bore down on the boat and the exhausted men were lifted on board. nc of those who had put off in the boat was a corpse and many of the others were scarcely In a better ronditlon from the benumbing effects ot cold and wet. itl The chief ami second officers and 1 men were reporter! as still missing Jn a brief dispatch the Franeonia sent through here, but seamen are utterly unable to understand where the. balance of the leyland liner's crew are. May Have Hevn Upset. The possibilities were discussed Tuesday afternoon, that Capt. McDonald and the unaccounted men had been picked up by some other ship; that their boat had upset alongside or after leaving the ship; or that they had perished on board the steamer in the lire. The Columbian, which Is well known In Halifax, carries a crew of 4" to f0 men and the Franconia's message accounted for only 3li perhOTlS. The meager dispatches received here from tho Franeonia. coupled with the information sent out by the Seydlitz Monday, gives but a faint outline, of what must have been one of the most thrilling and terrible stories in all the annals of the sea. The fire, breaking out in the dead of night, followed by a series of explosions from the cargo that wrecked the steamer, the hurried call for help, and the failure of the wireless before its mission could be completed and the name of the steamer or her location uien; the long hours spent In the life boats with all the consequent suffering and the uncertainty as to th fate of the major part of the crew; these broad outlines were all established by the lranconla's tneskicp. The intimate details of the hurried flight for safety, the violent effects of the explosion and the personal incidents that must have arisen ran onlv be guessed at now. Y rock oil Ry 1'xploslon. the Seydlitz Monday the Columbian must have been pretty completely wrecked by the explosion?. Her foremust was gone and her funnel also had been uprooted. It was undoubtedly the b'ss of the foremast that disabled the wireless apparatus and this must have followed very shortly on the outbrea k o f the Hre, for the wireless operator had barely time to smd out his call for help before his message was cut off. A few minutes
more might have beon the salvation i of all the crew for had the ship'.name and position been sent out Into the ether, some other vessel would have caught it and hurried to aid. A wireless dispatch from Franeonia gave the following list of survivors from the Columbian on board: Quartermasters Jens Jensen. A. F.elniek and Jens Jens. Wireless oji-ratrir James Rroham. TGHIHG ECZEMA IS DRIED RIG "up wrm sulphur Use Like Cold Cream to Subdue Irritation and Clear the Skin. Constant or intermittent irritation producing itching and red. angry Eczeam patches on the skin is readily relieved with bold-sulphur crtam. The moment It is applied the itching stops and the healing begins, says a noted dermatologist. It effects such prompt relief, even in aggravated Eczema that it is a never-ending source of amazement to physicians. For many years bold-sulphur cream has occupied a secure position in the treatment of cutaneous eruptions by reason of its cooling, parasite-des'.roy-ing properties. It Is not only parasiticidal but also antipruritic and antiseptic and nothing has ever been found to take its place In overcoming Irritable and inflammatory affections of the skin. While not always establishing a permanent cure, yet in every Instance it instantly tops the agonizing Itching; subdues the irritation and heals the inflamed raw skin right up and it is often years later before any Eczema eruption again appears. Those troubled should get from any pharmacist an ounce of bold-sulphur cream and apply it directly upon the affected skin like you would any ordinary cold cream. It isn't unpleasant and the prompt relief afforded is very welcome, particularly when the Eczema is accompanied with itching. Advertisement. Copyright. 1914.
