HEALTH BOARD ILL
ASSIST DISPENSARY Will Report All Births to Children's Nurse in Future Plan to Help the Young Mothers of South Bend.
Plans by which cooperation with the city health board may a;d in the baby tavin; wurk have been worked out by the Children's Dispensary association und an encouraging report of results obtained was kiv n Wednesday afternoon at the monthly meeting' of the Dispensary board. According to the new plan, a report of all births Is made by the hoard of health to the Dispensary nurs and the cases are Investigated by her. Literature is left with the mother and where necessary subsequent visits are made. To assist in the work of investigation a committee of volunteer workers was appointed with Mrs. Charles Hosenbury as head. During the months of February and March, 1G7 birth reports were made to the dispensary by the health board. Of these, 1.,:: were reached. Seventy-nine were Polish, 1M Hungarian, nine German, nino Delgian, eight American, two Jewish and one Lithanian. Preparations for the summer work are going forward and the association has been the recipient of a number of useful gifts to aid in the preparation. Mrs. Myron Campbell's Sunday school class made the gift of money; Mrs. York of baby garments and bed supplies; the Ellsworth store, baby garments, ahd Mrs. A. Marsh's Sunday school class, furniture for the dispensary itself, including hall trees, clothes hampers, umbrella racks and other articles. Davies' laundry is doing the laundry work of the institution without charge. The dispensary is in the need of a desk and the olhcialx would aj -predate the donation of one. Kight new cases were reported during March, two from tho associated charities. There are 173 enrolled at present. During the month 135 home visits were made. Five clinics were held at which there were 36 in attendance. Fifteen are being supplied with milk, of which 4."7 quarts were purchased. Twenty-four pre-natal calls v.-ero made. In the branch library there were 23 new borrowers, making a total of fiSe. During the month 462 books were loaned. Miss lialley is taking her vacation during April, a.s it would be impossible for her to leave the work during the summer months. Her place is being tilled for the present by Mis i:va Tuck.
II b i: opened the door, gave a quick -hiiddering ' glance arounds the hotel room, then threw herself aemss the
loot of the bed. j Sh was ill tremblingly, quivering- , ly ill. Hot arid cold tla.sh-s were) sweeping over her. J Ir had com upon her suddenly! while she was going through th British museum. How she got back to the hotel she clhl not know. Then, was a drtzed n collection of a;-king a i policeman what bus to take, and of the ; ride bark, which scorned endless but;
nothing was clear. Anil now she ); there too weak to even take off her things. W hat was it? Was she going to be very ill? Jf she roubl only reach Warren! She was terrified at the thought of being there alone; until six the time they had arrange to meet. liut there was no way she coiilj reach him by 'phone. With a determined effort she arose, got out of her clothes, and into a loos dressing gown, but she was so dizzy .she could hardly stand. Oh, how good it felt to slip in between the cool fresh sheets, for now hhe was burning with fever. In a moment her hot face had warmed the pillow and she moved her hesid for a cooler part. She had intended to ring for the maid while she was up, and now she lay looking at the bell, dreading tho effort it would take to reach It. Her whole body seemed to shrink from motion, she wanted only to lie still. When once nior th finally forced herself out of bed and over to the bell, she crept back again with a wave of nausea surging through her, while the whole room seemed to sway. The maid came, a typical English maid with white cap and rosy com-pb-xion. With quick sympathy she asked if Madame was ill. Helen sent her for some ice water "with ice in it". For the luke-warm water the English us Oil always sickened her. Never had the clinking of ice against a pitcher sounded so grateful. The maid put the water on a stand by the bed and Helen drank eagerly a large glassful. Warren Arrive;. "Perhaps madame has had a chill,"
she suggested, when Helen told her of the hot and cold Hashes and the cold perspiration. A chill! Strange she had not thought of that. Fnquevtionably it had' been a chill. Put it was more than that i:ow. for she was conscious of a sore throat and of a curious ache In every limb. "Would madame like to see a doctor?" Heb n hesitated. She knew nothing of the English doctors, and ill as she was, she had visions of enormous hills. "No. I think I'll wait till my husband comes he'll be here at six." "If you'll take a little brandy, ma'am." ventured the maid. "That's always good for a chill."
"There's a :lask of brandy in Mr. 'uttis's satchel the one oer there ou the chair. I don't think it's lock- . When the maid had gone she lay b.-o-k with cl sed eyes. The brandy was tingling through her. bringing a celicjous sense of drowsiness. Her thoughts grew confused. In a few moments she was asleep. "Hello. there! What's all this?" .'he awoke with a tart to rind Warren standing beside the bed. For a moment she was too dazed to speak. Then she murmured a vague: "Oh. dear. I'm so sick." Sick? What's the trouble?" "I'm afraid I've had a chili." "Chill? Nonsense! Something you've eaten has upset you." ' "Put. Warren, I've a fever now. Jut le 1 how hot my face it." Helen was not one of the many wornrn who exaggerate and take advantage of every slight illness that they may receive sympathy and attention from their husbands. Yet she was now conscious of a thrill of something like satisfaction when Warren felt her forehead and found it so feverish that the curt Indifference of his manner was somewmat modified. "Yes, you are a little feverish." he admitted. "You've taken cold, that's all. It's this confounded c!ir iate. Upets anybody. 7on't feel veil today myself." It was one of Warren's ob-rn.-.-tcris-tics that whenever Helen felt badly he would always make sorrc remark about not being well himself. He had not kissed her since he entered, ami now she put up a tremulous hand to draw down his head. "Oh, I'm all -dusty," drawing back. "This Iondon grim? cuts into your skin. Iet me get washed up." "(luess you don't feel like going out to dinner?" "Oh, Warren!" She could not keep the reproach out of her tone. "Well, I'm not asking you. Needn't put on such an injured air. What do ou want sent up here?" In a rush it came to Helen that she was to be left alone again that Jip
v as to send up her dinner anti go out for his. "Dear, can't you have your dinner sent up. too?" "Certainly not. I couldn't eat up here. Now, for heaven's sak, don't get fussy Just because you're a little upset. I'll send up some chicken broth? What else?" "I don't think I can ratanythin," tremulously turning away. "Course, you can. A little broth'll be good for you. I won't be gone lone. Jurt going to some chop house near here." He stooped over and kissed her hurriedly. "Now don't think you're going to be sick. It's only this beastly climate. Most Americans get a touch of it." Ixft Alone. When the door closed after him

utier selh-hness. but tonight it seemed ! forced upon her. J How could he leave hei alon. when ' he could so easily have had las dinner ; sent up? What if she should be 5e-'
j riousiy ill over h-re? It was not the j illness thac she thought of with such j : terror, but the fear of learning to what
i(Ntre:ne warrens sciiisnness and m- ' difference might go. She must not be ill she must not put him to that test, i A little later there was a knock at I the door, and a waiter entered with a tray and placed It on the bed beside j her. There was a bowl of chicken broth, thin buttered it and some
crisp fresh romaine salad. At lea.st Warren had remembered
that she loved romaine. u was an absurdly little thing to offset the rest of i his selfishness, yet it brought a faint , glow of pleasure.
Put she could not eat. Just tho exertion of raising on her elbow to get at the tray made her dizzy. When Warren returned lie frowned at the untouched tray. "That's no way to do. You've got to eat to keep up your strength." "Pear, I couldn't!" appealingly stretching out her hand on the cover-
I let with the hope that he might tako
it and mi down beside her. I "You haven't tried," ignoring her ' hand. "Now, see if you can't take ; some of thut broth. Wait. I'll fix that
pillow at your back. Py George, these. English pillows are heavy and hard as cricks. Thought you were going to have the maid take off this bolster." "I did tell her, dear, but I guess she forgot." "Huh. she didn't want to take it off.
She always made her beds with a
nig soggy ooister and two big soggy 1 illows and she's not going to change. That's the English of it." He jerked oif the bolster so roughly that the whole lied shook and the bowl of broth sloshed out on the tray cloth. "There now." adjusting the two re-
maining pillows at Helen's back. ! Obediently she sipped at the broth, then pushed it a.side with a faint. 'Dear. I can't! My throat's too sore!" "Throat sore? Why's that?" His I tone implied that she hau wilfully I chosen to have a sure throat. "It's been sore all afternoon. You don't think I can be getting tonsilitis? Doesn't that start with a chill?" ! "Tonsilitis huh? Wonder you don't say diphtheria. You get a touch i of cold and you think you've something serious. Here, I'll ring for the
waiter to take this tray away, and yau turn over there and try to sleep.

"Oh, no no.M . , Alone Again. "Well, now, don't get up and do a lot of fussing around and catch more cold. That thing's loose sleep in that. I'm going down stairs to get oif some letters. And I want to find you asleep when I come back. I'll turn in without waking you. You'll be all right in the? morning."
He had switched off the light so it!
would not shine in her eyes, and Helen lay there In the darkened room with an -iche in her heart that was much harder to bear than the pain in her throat.
When, an hour later, 'ie came back, ,
she wis not asleep, but she lay with closed eyes pretending that she was. He got out of his clothes with a heavy man's ponderous attempt to be silent. The bed creaked loudly when he. got in, but still Helen feigned unconsciousness. It would only irritate him to find her awake. In a few minutes he was sleeping soundly, while she lay beside him restlessly turning her heated pillow and listening to the quarter hour chimes from some distant church tower.
