Their resistance hadn't the stubbornness they had shown at Gomez Palacio. Sundav morning found the rebels in possession of the Bull Iiing of Torreon. Until Monday night there was little lighting, a surrender being; expected. Finally Villa decided that, while he procrastinated, General Velasco, the federal chief, was strengthening the barracks and 'dobe houses in the center of the city, 'o now began the desperate hand-to-hand night lighting. Villa's men in squads of 10 and 20, bored their way from street to street, f-ghting with other squads of the same size with revolvers, hand grenades and ritles, dodging behind corners, taking refuge in house doors and ducking from showers of bricks and boulders ! hurled from the tops of 'dobe houses. I The federals fell back, foot by foot, and sometimes groups of llucrta men who had been isolated in the lighting threw down their guns and dashed for the darkened desert rather than yield themselves as prisoners of war. No Thought of Quarter. There was no thought of giving quarter. None was asked. The rebels . drunk with the spirit of battle, threw gaspipe bombs into federal barricades and up on the roofs of houses, where their enemies were bring on them, while from the mountain sides, on the outskirts of Torreon, Villa's artillery showered shrapnel into the barracks where crowds of federal soldiers awaited the linal onslaught of the rebel liordes. It was a scene of battle transplanted from the middle ages into the 20th century, high explosives and automatic pistols taking tho place of pikes and swords. Into this hell came looting and the other horrible features of war. .Soldiers of both sides dragged out barrels of liquor and broke into business places and private houses. Crazed looters were seen staggering along the streets shouting and screeching :md singing with long strands of ! costly lace wound around their necks and "trailing in the gutter and with beautiful ostrich feathers stuck into their hats. All the whiles the clatter of rifles, the roar of cannon and screech of machine guns split the air. o the night passed. Bright and and early in the morning, however. General Villa and his staff arrived on the scene and in a brief hour order took the place of chaos. He had the doors of drinking places nailed up. stopped the looting and ordered that anybody caught selling liquor should

And so the lighting went n intermittently day and night until Viila' steady plugging literally wore the n. -my down to oaith. The hardest lighting, with Kreati sr losses, was done by the rebel Dnrat.g. brigade. To us Americans this brigade was the most interesting f all the soldiers on this bloody field. They know what lighting is. For 11 davs last, fall they fought ard raged around this same city. Much of the time with nothing to eat and little to drink. That, battle was a failure. This time they won. The rurales, famous as old man Diaz's mounted constabulary, for.ght to the last ditch.
