ANNUAL SESSION HELD BY LUMBER DEALERS
Advertise, Says B. A. Johnson When Speaking on War on Substitutes Shows Shingles From Washington Home.
That the retail lumber dealer if. only reaping tho fruits of his own non-ad vert Islnsr policy when ho rails against the inroad of tho dahrs in "metal lumber", ctmont, brick, asbestos, etc., on tho lumber business, was tho contention mado Thursday afternoon by Boiling Arthur Johnson of tho 4'Lumbor World Keviow" at the 14th annual session of tho Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan Lumber Dealers' association at tho Oliver hotel. Mr. Johnson tfavo an address on "Tho War on Substitutes" and advocated persistent, systematic advertising by tho retail dealer as tho best weapon for tho lumberman' protection. Advertising ho pointed out the ono great weapon of th; ''substitute men. As an illustration of their campaign h? pointed out that $ , 00-0.000 had been spent by advertisers of "su Institutes" durintr the xast year as compared to $200,000 by lumber dealers. Mr. Johnson also took occasion to prove that the cry that the supply of lumber will soon be exhausted is Kroundlcsx. He eibd figures Iuaned recently that thrre arc today eipht billion acres of forset yet untouched and if all the timber on this wer sawed Into lumber it would make eiqht tTlllion feet or enough to last "at least until till present inhabitants of tho. earth have passed away." The great cry about tho diminishinr of the lumber supply Johnson sa.id comes from tho manufacturers of steel, metal, cement and other substitutes. To prove that in the majority of cases "wood lumber" will endure as Ion and longi r than "metal lumber" the speaker exhibited souv shingle? taken from Mt. Vtih):i. the homo of Tteorfre Washincrton. One of these was on the original roof having been laid in 174.".. Another shinclo vill one said to have bvn laid by Washington himself in 17Sr when a repair was made on the m f. The tliird shingle was laid In 1SC.'. In .Mt. Ver non wm ontlrelv reidiimb'd for the tirst time said Mr. J hnro He did not believe that a roof f any other material would have lasted as lone as the one of cypress. A. Cono of the "American Lumberman" followed Mr. Jihrr-on with an address on "Modern Features of Association Work" in which h pointed out the advantages that may be gained
by co-operation between retail lumber men. The Marx company playing at the Orpheum entertained with sevral numbers as did Hilly Eager of Chieago. The entertainers were repeatedly encored. Mayor Ke'.ier anil
Mayor McOill of I.porte also made,
short speeches. A'i invitation irom the Eaporte Chamber of Commerce for tho 1115 meeting was also heard to be .acted upon later. At tho close of the program the following officers wero elected: Forest Hillier of South Vend, president; Maude it. Sparks. Berrien Springs, vice president; W. M. Haas. North Liberty, secretary-treasurer.

To pret instant relief bo tells us to pet a package of 10 prain Soxlacjen tablets at any pharmacy and take one or two tablets anytime, followed by a tumbler of water which promptly neutralizes this irritating acid; stops fermentation; absorbs th pases and inveetens the entiro dipestive system.
