Mrs. Stevens called this afternoon ;nd took me out in her car for a 'ittle drive. I suppose it was good for me to get out and yet I haven't ruich lieait for anything now while you're nway. With the exception of the dinner which I chaperoned Alice Brooks, this is the only time I've heen any"Where .ince you left. This morning I cleaned your closet, took all the things down, washed the .shelves and put on fresh paper. f found that pr.r of old fyr lined gloves you were loo.tlng for. I4 wish you had them with you now. Hut they are pretty much worn, so you had hotter get a new pair if you need them, as these will lust only a little while. 1 am "wondering if that underwear you hac with you is heavy enough. I'erh.nps you had Petter get some if you're going to he in poorly heated hotels. And that rough gray suit, is heavier than the other one. I hope you wore that the day you were in Chicago. Do take care of yourself, dear, and if you feel that you're getting a cold he sure to take some of your cotr-rh medicine. You have a Pottle with you. and if that isn't enough you hae the prescription. It's in that box -with your papers. Winifred is well. You ought to "have heen her playing with the kitten this evening. .She had it in her arms rocking back and forth just as I rock !her. I'm always afraid it will .scratch "her, although it seems to let her do almost anything she wants with it. . forgot to tell you thut the man -ame to tlx the kitchen sink Saturday. Occasionally t'arrie called in the afternoon, but Helen couhln't remember when they had ever come in the evening. She rati to answer the 4loor bell. "I guess this i a surprise." said rarr'e. She was thoroughly incen.-td, not only because Hoy had been scratched, but at what she felt was Helen's indifftrence. "You mustn't mind Carrie," murmured Lawrence, apologetically, as they were leaving. "She always gets nerou when Hoy cries." "I'm not nervous at all." said Carrie icily, overhearing him, "hut naturally l don't like to Li-ve. Hoy bitten by a vicious cat." When they had gone Helen went back to her letter. The old feeling of antagonism which Carrie almost always aroused in her wan very strong. She wondered why they were so antagonistic why Carrie could never call without something unpleasant happening:. Her tirst impulse was to write Warren an account of the call. Carrie and Iiwrence have just been here," she wrote. "And something unpleasant had to happen it seems that it always does when she comes. Koy was tormenting Pussy Purrmew and she scratched hl.i very justly I thought. Hut Carrie was furious, she said " Here Helen paused. Why was she writing this to Warren? What was to be gained by reciting an unpleasant incident? She tore up this page and wrote again. "Carrie and Lawrence have just been here. They were In the neighborhood and came In to see how I wa getting along. They asked after you and sent their love. I am marking off another day on the calendar six days now, but It seetr.c a month. I try to keep very busy so I will not miss you too much. Tomorrow I'm going to clear out the gantry those top shelves are dreadful. Delia has a way of putting everything tip there. Then Wednesday T v;:nt to take down the dining room curtains. The laundry almost ruined them last time and now I'm going to help Delia do them up here. So you see I am keeping very busy so 1 won't have too much time to think of you. Take care of yourself dear the best of care. And come back soon very soon to Your wife.

success, "The Third Degree", by Charles Klein, comes to the American theater today ami tomorrow. It requires five reels to tell the story. Howard Jefferles, jr., and Hubert L'nderwood are warm college chums. One night in a restaurant a pretty waitress, seeing Howard is intoxicated, refuses to wait upon him; he intuits her and is requested to leave. Next day he goes back to apologize, and the two become friends and eventually get married. Howard's father, who is a widower, marries again, the lady being an old friend and patron of Hob Underwood. The two boys leave college; the young artist establishes a studio and quotes Mrs. Jefferies, sr.,'s, name as a patron to induce an advantage. The lady withdraws her patronage and Underwood finds himself broke. Howard informs his father of his marriage and Is turned adrift and his allowance cut off. Underwood, not being able to borrow any more money from Howard, makes an appeal to the elder Mrs. Jefferies, informing her that he contemplates suicide. One night Howard, intoxicated, enters Underwood's studio and lying down on the sofa falls asleep. Hob line's him and places a screen around the couch. Mrs. Jefferies. sr., enters. Not seeing Howard, she has an interview with Underwood and refuse 5 him any assistance or influence, declaring their association at an end. Robert enters his sleeping room and placing a revolver at his head fires. His hell boy raises an alarm. The police arrive and find Howard leaning over the dead man's body. He is arrested ami Capt. Clinton puts him through the "Third Degree". The ordeal lasts for hours. Howard is thrown Into jail; his father refus.es aid, and instructs his own lawyer that the boy is a murderer and he must suffer, also that if the attorney takes the case he must not look for any more of the Jefferies patronage. Aside from the false confession, the only clue is the fact that a woman visited the studio on the niht of the tragedy. Howard's young wife induces Mr. Brewster, the corporation lawyer, to take the case in defiance of Jeffrie. At the trial. Mr. Brewster introduces lr. Bernstein, an expert on hypnotism, who confounded the police captain who extorted the confession. The case was dismissed and Atty. Brewster brought Howard's lather to the young folks' humble lodging and effected a reconciliation and happiness for all.
