When they reached the apartment the door was opened by a Japanese servant. The rooms were lartp- and oyiiuisitely furnished. Helen had nver l-fro I. en in a millionaire bachelor's apartment, and she was struck hy the luxurious apj. ointments. It reminded her of an elaborate stae :-ettin' of some society play. Alice pushed back her plate with a bitter laugh. "If we intended to quarrel 'all the time, we might as well have gone to a restaurant."
Coffee was served in the library and ,

and unsatisfactory as had been the dinner. "It's al.vays like this," murmured Alio, as they put on their wraps while Fairehild ordered the car. "We have not had a happy evening together for months." An hour later Helen was standing before the mirror in her own room, slowly brushing her hair for the night. She was living over every incident of the evening the dinner and the drive home. In a way she could understand Alice's love for this man. His charm
and magnetism were undeniable. And i yet his outrageous llirtations with I other women? Were all society men lik that, she wondered? Were none
of them content with the love of one woman? She finished plaiting her hair, slipped into a warm dresing gown and then sat down to write Warren his nightly letter. S"he told him every incident of the dinner, and of how it had all made her realize more than ever "now much his loyalty meant.

however. He can never realize her true worth. Being reared in an atmosphere of selfishness, judging by his parents and sister Carrie, Warren is too obstinate and selfish to be a gentleman, and is unjust to Helen, where his people are concerned. He should have more regard for her feelings, than for those of his family. He is rude to her in the presence of friends and relatives. His most grevious fault was in coming home intoxicated. knowing that Helen's old lover. Will Farrel. was to dine with them. And yet she forgave him for humiliating her in the presence of the gentleman she had cast aside in order to marry him. When ;mgry. he refuses to speak to her. or orders her about like a refractory child. He seems to think, as husband and wife are one, he must be the one. He is almost entirely to blame for their domestic dilliculties. Helen could be happy and contented without a servant ami fewer luxuries, if Warren was kind and
