This is the picture, in miniature, of manners in army society, drawn before a divorce court by Fredericka Stephens Naylor, wife of Lieut. Charb.-s J. Naylor, of the U. 5. A. is I-htln. now, in defense of her rcjKda.ion. Her answer to charpes m.ide by her liusband brings to the foreground the amazing statements in regard to a soui:iI code in army posts that is peculiarly its own. When the husband asked for a divorce he named a civilian. The testimony of Mrs. Naylor before a special ma.er completely vindicate-d her. but her husband appealed and the evidence is made public. Mrs. Naylor'f experience In army life includes residences at Fort Mycr, Va.; Jefferson Barracks, Mo.; the Prepidio. at Monterey, Cal.: Fort Made, I)., and at Newark, N. J. Mrs. Naylor Is directing her flpjht from her parents' home, at Joplin, Mo. w here she lives with her two children. "Thre is not very much domestic life in the army," Mrs. Naylor further testified. "The. ladies don't think very much of their domestic, life. They think mostly of p;oine and hvint fun, dancing- and horseback riding. It Is not an unusual thin? it is. a very usual thin? to see oiheers wives with other officers when the officer is on puard or on some duty that he has to attend to; some o nicer taking some other otllcer's wife to a function. "Tt is Just a little world of our own.
Kverybody knows everybody else. "We Just livo Informally, and ofllcerg aro around the house all the time. We don't think anything of doin? what we call 'spooning. It was not thought anything of; it was Just done in a lively spirit." Mrs. Naylor was asked: "Do you want us to understand that It was a common thing for officers and others at the posts to hug kiss and kiss each others' wives?"
It certainly seemed to be at the
posts I lived In," she replied.
