Th'; majority of hotcraph"rs, all of whom are unxloua to jnave her pone for them, are otiicjb'3f. with the Idea of phowing off her wonderful garments ami jewels, and seldom catch h-r ruddy cheeks, her sparkling Kn-at, gray eyes, the cv er-chanKing expression, the parting lips, and the pearly teeth.

at tin: oKrm:rM. When the famous comedian, Richard. Carlo, played at the Audltorium In the original production of '"The Tenderfoot." it is doubtful if he appeared before more appreciative audiences than have been reetint? the tabloid version which v.ill be fceen at the Orpheum beginning Thursday. Harry Shannon, in Mr. Carle'.s former part of Profesor I'ettlbone, has been most enthusiastically received nnd his comical personality aptly fits tho peculiar character of the timid tenderfoot who has Mich a terrihlo time arnonjc the wild arid wholly Covhoy.s, and to him, even more hrrible Kirln of the western ranches. Mr. .Shannon's pepforrua nee, however, is not the onhy feature of the entertainment. 'The Tenderfoot" is crammed full of lauijhanio situations and the tabloid production is boiled down to Include all of the very best of them. The rnule that made Carle's work In the play so successful, is made the very met of by Mr. Shannon and a well drtllel chorus assists materially in making the tabloid a distinct hit. The Fris. o Newsboys' tmartet, is composed of Jerome Flannigan, Lelloy H.-Lscom. Sytl Garrison and Hilly Wilson, sill South Bend boys and well known through their former appearance here. The pletr has been well equipped with puitable scenery, the Kirls arc admirably costumed and tho entire production, one of merit.

TJ-1S MISKItAIlLKS" COMIXfi. "Is Miserable," th creat photoplay, taken from the story of Victor liuco's greatest literary work of that name which is to be presented at the Oliver for one week starting Monday matinee, tells "especially" the story of a man's trials, miseries nnd sufferings in a manner never to be forgotten. Opening" with the scene of the starving household and the theft of the loaf of bread, tho action moves rapidly, touching the salient points in the narrative, accenting the evolution of nobility in Jean Valjean, dwelling upon his affection for Costette, while through all, weaves the persecution of Javert and the rescallty of the Thenars iers. This is a photoplay worth peeing and the tragedy of the life of Jean Valjean, whose crime was not his own, but a reflection of the guilt of society that refuses work and bread for tho laborers, is tragedy that like that of the old Greek dramatists tragedy that purities tho soul. No one. can go away from this photoplay without being uplifted by the sublimity of the Triest Myricl and the hero, Jean Valjean,

WASHINGTON. Jan. 2 9. The Natl al Social Welfare league was Wednesday organized with the consent and approval of Pres. Wilson and Atty. Gen. McKeynolds to care for the women of the underworld who are to be driven from the segregated district. This plan originated with Commissioner Finch of the department of Justice who lias been in charge of "white slave" investigations. The Welfare league is the first institution of its kind ever organized in the United .States. Pres. Wilson and Atty. Gen. McKeynolds both favor the plan which was laid before them Wednesday by Commissioner Finch. It is proposed in this home to give women employmen by which they will be paid $8 a week. Commissioner Finch visited Pres. Wilson with three women workers in charge of homes for the unfortunate women who have been legislated out of Washington. After a talk the president agreed to delay signing the bill until every arrangement could be made for the women. This satisfied

Commissioner Finch, who thereupon i

visited the department of justice and obtained the consent of Atty. Gen. McKeynolds to the plan. The National Social Welfare league has offices in the Woodward building. Here women may apply for and get wrrk at a minimum wage of $S a week. Officials of the Florence Crittenden Home in Washington stated that the women who applied would be cared for indefinitely in that institution which will wo:k with the new National Social Welfare bureau. Police here stated that the exodus of the women from the segregated district will be accomplished without difficulty.

CLEAN UP IS DEMAND MADE ON SAN FRANCISCO Twelve hundred South Bend citizens will not attend the Panama exposition unless the city of Sun Francisco makes an effort to "clean-up" morally. This is the message that a letter will convey from J. Q. Ames, secretary of tho Y. M. C. A., to the mayor of the coast city, expressing1 the unanimous opinion of the br Oliver theater mass meetintr at wnieh Owen W. Wiard, Chicago detective, talked Sunday. Tho letter will be mailed Thursday by the secretary, by request of the bi meeting which voted that he deliver its opinion to the western city. According to Wiard, San Francisco is tho most immoral city in the union and already numbers of cities over the country have started movements demanding tvat the mayor of- that city "clean up" or the. people will not attend tho exposition next year.

This year, as in former years, Mrs. Wilson enjoys the distinction of making the President's Christmas Cake, using Calumet Baking Powder.

Some little time ago I made a careful study and investigation of tho baking powder tubject and I feel fully repaid. J am firmly convinced from the results I have received that there is no baking powder to equal Calumet for wholesomeness and economy, and I also recommend Calumet Baking Powder for its never failing results. December 9, 1913. Mrs. Betty Lyler Wilson. Calumet also received the Hishest Awards at tha World' Pure Food Exposition, Chicago and Paris, France, 1912. When our lady representative calls, let lier prove to you the purity, wholesomeness and economy of Calumet Baking Powder. It's real merit will interest you.
