15V (iOTIIAM KNHKi:niu)( Ki:i:. NLW Y 'UK, Jan. 2l. 1 f-- a tf-r-rilde atrage brewing in t he distance. Thf plotters are nt work. T!u- lp.nci iit tango must be slaughtered. After entertaining society for many moons. its hosts are about to turn and rend it limb from limb. " Fvery body's doing it." That's the n-ason The Firth a v. leaders are to use the knife. You see this is a game which the soc iety leaders have played lor years. Thev cut their coats short and six months later the hoi poliio has fol- l lowed suit. Then there is a great hurry and hustle in the upper r alms to get new eoats, cut long. Anybody with one of the short wats is out vi it. Six months go by. The "common herd" has waked up t.o the fact that "the style has changed." Long coats begin to appear on l-.'th and 14th sts. There is again cor.fusiou and turmoil among the leaders. Again they cut their coats short, but in a little different shape from the short coats above referred to. Six months later but what's the use? You all know the system. So this is the way the tango is going. It started with some London bishops. The curious queen of Kr.gland. who sets herself up us a model of everything, also disapproved. German royalty found the steps to be noi for fat persons. Furopean society circles slavishly bowed. TIiom- Didn't Count. F.ut let me tell you as one who 'Knows his little old New York that it v.as none of these which caused the sentence of execution on Miss Tango hereabouts. Society found its -If doing no more than was being ne in S'liiashtown, Sullivan county, and stood aghast. It is still standing, gasp ng, and looking around for a substitute. This substitute will soon be found anil then "good night Miss Tango." She'll disappear from Sherry's and the Fifth av. ball rooms, a littie later the Astor will know her no more, and then by degrees she wil! become extinct in dancing palaces of lesser and lesser rank, until the day will come when she will only be known in truly rural communities, where city visitors will timl her in the summertime and marvel at the qua'oi. old customs. DON'T STi:AL KADI I'M. The theft of a tiny disk of radium from a hospital here almost .simultaneously with the purloining of a similar valuable spec k ot smear in Chicago naturally lead one versed in the ways of the underworld to surmise the formation of a radium thief trust. There are organizations of crooks who make a specialty of stealing automobiles in the street, dressing" them up, and selling them in other cities; there are clothing thief league s, there are dog thieves and chicken thieves, fraternities of postottice yeggs and clubs of pickpockets. So why not radium thieves? AH the radium thieves need is a catchy name. like, "white nander" or "rank tiend" to be admitted to our best circ les of crimonology. My idea of what not to steal is a nice little chunk of radium say enough almost to choke a ladybug if she tried to swallow it. about $."io.0 00 worth. After sneaking into that awesome plac e, a hospital for special diseases, and swiping it but of the side of some poor devil of a cancer patient's face, the thief would like as not put his find in his inside coat pocket and stroll along P.roadway from K.r(.vseeond to Thirty-fourth st.. where more full Hedged criminals are on view any sunshiny afternoon than in any similar stretch of the civilized world, lie would enjoy a few haurs of bliss. lie would read in the afternoon papers of the mysterious theft of J.'uC.enO worth of radium and buckle. Fut when night fell that section of his clothing netr the tube of radium wonbl u'low as though possessed by the dtvil. The first policeman he passed wculd grab him by the coat collar. And supposing he had lime to slip the tube out of his pockets, his could would go on plowing with a white light just the same. He would be thrown into jail with slight chance of escaping. F.ut he should worry--the radiui would already hae eaten into his llesh to such an extent that he would be well on the way to the grave by morning' anyway. If ever it's true that virtue is its own reward, it will be found so by liuht lingered gentry who keep away from tlm temptation of radium. i ;n't Make le or It. Fven supposing these artists arc clever enough to protect themselves from the baleful rays. They will he much harder up than the man who robbed a farmer of a Jlu.enn blooded calf and then found he could only sell the animal for live dollars'. worth of cal. If it was a nugget of r- the unlawful possessor v'uld sav "I was wandering along the edge of the great Amargosa ci-seit one day. j when suddenly." and all t!.t. Hut n dy ever tound a nugget ot radium. Ferv milligram of radium has a pedigree and without said pedigree. I warn all my acquaintances among the thieving profession, their radium loot had best be thrown into the river. ! V'i.. V-' PARIS. Jan. An aerial mail ! serlce across l.Oeu miles of Sahara desert sand is the latest project ot 1 the Fr?nch government. It tomes as the culminating enterprise of a l )ng series of aerial successes in the last few months. j The new desert mail service by air will not be as simple, however, as are these short-distance trips which hav long been a regular thing along the Algerian border. The trip will be made in two days, with several stopsen route at stations which are nowbeing established and stored with food and supplies. The route is being marke d out with great stakes set up on the desert lloor at distances of ten ; mil s apart. The service will solve a century-old problem and obviate the terrors of the old desert trip by caravan, which took sometimes four months, and was subject to all the perils of heat, thirst ; and starvation, and sandstorms. i FillERS WILL REAP By-Products, According to J. M. Flannery, Would Increase Growth of Vegetables and Flowers 300 Percent. WASHINGTON. Jan. T!uhouse committee on mines and mining will report favorably this week the hill , for government control and develop-j mont on public; lands of all-radium bearing ores, according to Chairman Foster of the committee on mines and mining. The house will pass the bill without serious opposition. It will be required that the government shall give for free use to recognized authorities in the application of radium through free dispensaries connected with hospitals, centrally loeateil the government produced radium. Joseph M. Flannery, the radium king, president of the Standard Chemical Co. of Pittsburgh, refused again to tell who was the philanthropist, although pressed by Chairman Foster and other members of the committee. The by-products of radium. Mr. Flannery told the committee Thursday, would be a boon to the farmers be cause of their power to increase agriculture yield. He held that the giowth of vegetables and tlowers through the use of radium by-products can be increased to 300 p-r cent. He said that his company has a 134 acre farm which is being worked under the supervision of a corps oi agriculture scientists. Tests are being made to show the effect of the radium lv-preducts on plants when the by-product is mixed with fertilizer. This material can be sold so cheaply as to put it within the reach ot the average farmer. It increases largely the amount of sugar in the sugar beet. It improves the growth and quality of cabbage 300 per cent, corn 2 CO, tobacco 65, beans 3 3 and wheat 05 i.er cent. The radio activity affects and improves the fibres of the plants to a large degree as it does the human body. Kxperiments with potatoes have shown that it gives the potato plant a ib?nomcnal resistance to injurious injects. With roses and other llowers larger and more beautiful blooms with richer colors have been obtained. "The Michigan and Washington Mr. Heal Estate Purchaser 1 You have heard of frauds and foreeries in real estate i deals. Just now there is much talk about losses on account of the practices of a certain real estate dealer who recently filed a petition in bankruptcy, showing losses to creditors of nearly $150,000.00. Had these parties required abstracts or title insurance policies showing perfect titles much of this loss would not have occurred. Let us show you how to avoid such losses in the future. .
