"WITHIN THE LAW" Bayard Veiller, author of the play

"Within the Law," which comes to the Oliver theather for three days, starting at today's matinee, has chosen for the theme of his melodrama a

cross - section out of the life of a poor shop-girl, who after "serving time" for a theft she didn't perpetrate, vows to "get even" which she does by mar-

rying the son of her former employer.

She is not in love or does not believe she in in love with Dick Gilder, but marries him to bring disgrace to his father, who was the real means of sending her to prision. The employer, in order to make an example and stop the petty thievery which has been going on in his department store, "takes away her name and gives her a number," so she decides that she will "get even"by taking his name, thus causing the public disgrace that will follow the young man's marriage with an ex-convict. Meantime, following her release from prision, she organized a band of "crooks" and takes her revenge upon society by helping in various nefarious money procuring schemes that are nevertheless alwavs "Within the Luv."

Roberston's

pleasantly surprised . You will surely enjoy this drama because you will understand and appreciate the heartstruggle of Marsden and his wife and their temperamental differences. Earle Williams and Edith Storey are in the cast. Ormi Hawley willl be seen in "A Love of '64".

AT THE ORPHEUM. For the balance of the week beinning New Year's matinee, the Orpheum will offer a new bill of vaudeville made up of attractive novelties and clever acts. Topping the bill and presenting an net away out of the ordinary is Lalla Seblini, known as the murieal Venus on wheels. Playing the difficult and pretty Traummeri on a violin while riding and balancing herself on one wheel is one of her feature stunts. Selbini in her new act introduces a number of. other original tricks on a bicycle. Khe rides in an Annette Kellerman costume suitable, for the surf as well as the state and is assisted by two others in her part of the program. John T. Doyle and company will present a comedy playlet that is full of life and novelty. The scene is the office of the inspector of police and the surprising incidents are capably presented by the strong supporting company. The story is unique, full of unexpected twists and bits of real acting that have true value. Wilson brothers will offer a new line of Dutch comedy that is guaranteed to amuse. Clever parody singers and twisted dialect comedians of ability they have an act arranged for laughing purposes only and their spot on the bill is sure to be a lively one. Jerome and Carson are a clever team with a turn made up mostly of acrobatics in which one bit of surprisingly wonderful work so rapidly succeeds another that it makes them seem almost commonplace. There are a lot of big tricks crowded into this act, all skillfully performed. Billy Chase, a topical song singer, is a laugh-getter with his routine of ridiculous nonsense and the whole bill lines up strong.

LYMAN HOWE PICTURES. The Lyman Howe pictures - an entirely new series, by the way began a two days' engagement at the Auditorium last evening and pleased as Howe's pictures always do. Considerable time and film is deoted to the details of digging and building the Panama canal which is shown from almost very possible angle and gives an excellent idea of this work that is nearing completion. Probably no other exhibitor has the facilities and the oppornunities to get pictures that so really reproduce the interesting phases of this sort of work as Mr. Howe. His camera men seem to have the knack of poking into odd corners, ascending to impassible heights and delving into the very heart of asubject so that nothing of interest is left uncovered. His accompanying sound effects add to the realism and the scenes are woven into a continuous story that leaves a lasting impression. In addition to the Panama scenes, which are made the principal feature of this series, excellent views and out-of-the-ordinary scenes in Yellowstone park are shown with facinating realism. This is an oft-photographed subject but has neer been shown with quite the fidelity to nature before. The action of the geysers has been particularly well filmed.

"SCHOOL DAYS." The Angel Musical comedy have picked a sure wrinner to start the new year at the Majestic and will offer the liveliest piece in their whole repertoire, "School Pays". With the jolly comedians as mischievous school boys and the classy girls as lively maids in school, and Arthur Angel as a German teacher, it isn't hard to imagine an entertainment that will put the "glooms" on the run. The musical selections are particularly suited for this style of show. There are "kid" number and "kid" dances, "kid" stories and school room scenes that never happened, but the whole affair is so fast and funny, clean ard clever, bright and breezy that it is going to be one of the record breaking performances of this engagement.

"THE LEADING LADY." The stage has a great fascinaiton for many people, and there is hardly anyone who is not interested in the lives of the "stars'. But many have an idea that there is nothing good connected with their life. If you have such an idea be sure to see "The Leading Lady" on New Year's day at the American theater and you will be
