At least on" of the banks, the Oitizervs National, is practically certain to enter th system as tin- oflicern feel the bill as amended in the fniate has bf-en fonru d to overcome objections which may have been enterfn to the original draft. "There have been so many amenuinentfl and changes in the bill during Its ppndency in conpre?s that it is difficult to know exactly the provi sions of the new measure." said My ron Campbell of the South l!nd National bank, one of the city's best ; posted men in finance. "Our bank will probably take no action toward i?nterinK the system until we have obtained a draft of the law." Thn banks are allowed at the outFide a year in which to decide whether they will enter the system at the -end of which timo. if they fail to loin, they must surrender their char ters as national banks. A few Indiana banks have already surrendered their charters and ap plied for licenses to operate as Ftate Institutions. Tho foremost amonp Chicatro bankers have approved the new measure and signified their in tention of Joining the system. The South Iend bankers reserve their decision until more definite information Lis obtained. Ilanks Iso Interest. Discussing the features of the surIreney bill Myron Campbell sai.l F Tuesday: "I believe the clause. ! which will work the greatest hardhip on our banks is that which re- ( quires that we lose the Interest on 'Ave pr cent of our total deposits by I depositing this amount in the reserve, 'i do not think the requirement that J banks subscribe six per cent of their I capital in stock of the central roil serve association will prove as uni popular ns the former provision. ', "In the case of a bank having, say i $50,00-0 in deposits, which is forced to deposit tlvo per cent of this amount now drawing interest at six per cent. In a place where it yields absolutely no -incomo, it means a dead lo.-s of $1,0 00 a year to the bank. As the amount of deposits increases the extent of the loss increases." W. Harrison, cashier of the Citizens' Xatpn.il bank, said the question of Joining the system would probably romo up at the nuctlng of Tlii directors Tuesday. Jan. IS. Although no definite action had been taken. Mr. Harrison said he believed It practically certain the bank would enter the system. "I believe most of the features which aroused objections have been eliminated through the, amendments to the bill." said lie. Practically the same corporation operates the Citizens' Loan and Trust 'o., a state institution, a fact which U is supposed would be an additional reason for the retention of the charter of the national bank. At the Merchants' National and Vlrst National, the other two banks In South Uend affected by the measure, it was said that the question was one for decision by the directorates and no opinions were ventured as to ajrtsnroui aou .jo siinsoa oqj 11PADT niQFAQP III-MUI UIUU1UL FROM ACUTE INDIGESTION , O FT EH FATAL 1 How often we read of some one 'dying" from heart disease a.s the result cf acute indigestion after a hearty rural. perfectly protected No matter what National Biscuit Company product you ask for crackers or cookies, . . wafers or snaps, . cakes or jumbles it will be delivered to you in perfect condition, either in packages with the famous In-er-seal Trade Mark, in attractive small tins or from the familiar glass-front cans. Freshness is assured through the distributing service of the National Biscuit Company, which affords a constant supply of biscuit to every part of the United States. Buy biscuit baked by NATIONAL BISCUIT COMPANY Always look for that name at Tin: onriiiiUM. When the management of the Orpheum were looking about for an extra good attraction to head the Christmas week bill they were fortunate enough to secure Roehm's Athletic girls, an act which has received universal praise all over the circuit. This act will open the eyes of the women patrons of the house to the advantages of physical culture. These girls, live in number, experts in bag punching, boxing, wrestling, and fencing, give an act illustrating every possible phase of these branches of sport. The girls keep busy every moment they are on the stage, eliminating useless posing, and show what a woman can make of herself by proper training:. There will doubtless be a hearty welcome for Ted 'McDean. former leading man at the Indiana, theater, who returns in a capital little comedy. "Let Well Knough Alone". This is iMr. McLean's iirst appearance here in a number of years and he now has the assistance of a charming leading woman in his novel dramatic episode. Just to lend fun and jollity to the bill Phlna and her pickaninnies, fresh from Carolina, will sin?, dance and reproduce their levee pastimes. Phina is a dusky belle, with ability and good looks anil her romping1 picks will make a lively spot on the big holiday j bill. I Young and April are novelty jugglers with a new equipment Tor an act of this kind. No cannon balls, or cumbersome clubs are used, just freshly-blown rainbow soap bubbles, and what they can do with these fragile spheres is something little short of marvelous. To add melody and mirth to the program, the De Michle brothers. Italian street musicians, will render popular and classic music. COSTKLI.O AT AMKKICAX. The Christ ma-s offerings at the American theater include Maurice Costello in a Vitasraph drama. "The Sale of a Heart". Through an unexpected revelation a girl is delivered from a rich profligate and finds happiness with the man she loves. I'dgar Jones in "An Evening's Aid", with other pictures make up the rest of the program. Aye Hair Vssor Tncn you will have a clean and healthy scalp. No more hair Joss. gaudi:n or aixaii." Promptly at 2 o'clock on Christmas at the Auditorium "The Garden of Allah" will begin an engagement of live performances. It is safe to say that no drama of recent times has taken such a firm hold on the local theater-going public. Prominent in the cast are Sarah Truax, Lawson liutt. John Blair, Antonio Salerno, William Jeffrey and Grace Noble. The play is a dramatization of the Hichens novel that was one of the" best sellers of a few years ago, and closely follows the novel. The monk who pines for freedom and human love, who iolates his oaths and bursts r.:s bonds, and who. by so doing, brings misery on himself and on a pure noble woman, is a figure as old a.s the monastic Idea Itself. What is new is Hichens' setting of the subject. Those responsible for the dramatization of the book have recognized to the full the secret of the book's success. They have accordingly taken far more than ordinary pains to re- ; produce the "atmosphere" of the story. The result is a remarkably. faithful portrayal of the spirit of the story, and a really extraordinary at- j tractive series of artistic stage pictures, j To witness the play is to witness a i series of kalesedcopic pictures show- : ing the desert in all Its mocds. They . follow one another in rapid sequence. ! First there is the sunrise on the desert, with' the strange indistinctive caravan, and the figures of the Arab dismounting from his camel and wor- . sniping the sun. It is but a Hash, J this scene, yet how eloquent in its silence and mystery it is! Then there is the road to the monastery in the forests near Tunis, with that strange and tragic figure of the monk j battling with himself and destiny. 1 This, again, is but a Hash, and then ; there bursts on the delighted vision ; of the audience the verandah of the Algernon hotel, with gay crowds of Arabs in front of it, and beyond the desert, unceasing in its call, fascinating in its stern, strange beauty. Three great scenes there. There has been little of dialogue and little of action, yet already we have been carried into the heart of the story and feel its tragedy gripping at the heart. So far it has been the spell of j the desert. Now comes even the warm, j strange smell of the east a vision 1 of an Arab city street with its boisterous crowds of merry makers and tourists and lvsxars and the girls dancing in the windows. This is changed again to the inside of the houses, with the wild eastern dancing girls and the barbaric Ethiopian en tertainers, and the strange music and costumes of the half savage natives, i Always the same two figures moving through the panorama the nervous, uncouth monk who has escaped after 10 years of monasterly life, and the girl who is touring the east alone. Then comes the beautiful garden of the gentle -and unhappy Count Anteoni, with its tropical luxuriance, and its poetic Arab piping of love. And last the great desert of Mogar, seen In the magic eastern night, the fury of a devastating duststorm, and the ethereal beautv of dawn. Here it is that the story reaches its climax. AT TILi: MAJESTIC. Preparing for the holiday crowds that will doubtless seek the Majestic for popular pastime, the Angel Musical Comedy company have arranged for the presentation of the mystifying extravaganza, "In Magic Land". As the title indicates, the story has to do with happenings in fairyland and opportunity Is given for the introduction of unique comedy situations and laughable comedy hits. This little playlet is particularly appropriate for AR3ERICP.fl Theatre South Henri's Foremost Pirture House.
