PAY DEMANDED BY FARMERS' WIVES FOR THEIR WORK
THE CHESTER OF VERA CRUZ
Send Letters to Secy, of Agriculture Saying "Their Work is Worth Something in Dollars and Cents."
nv cnsox gaiidnitu. WASHINGTON. Dec 6. Pres. WllBon has plvcn tuLstantlal help to the Poindexter bill for the povernment operation of railroads and coal mines in Alaska. Th president endorses not only tho senate committee proposition for a government built railroad with controlled ports, but he adds also that tho roads should be "ad ministered" by tho government, which means certainly that they
should not be leased or turned over
to private corporations. Then he gets to the vital thing In
the Polndexter proposition when he
pays that the construction of railways
Is only the first step; "is only thrust
ng In tho key to tho storehouse and
throwing: Lack the lock and opening
me door. Tae president does not
look with favor on letting the Gug
penheims rush tnt othis opened door.
Jle Kays: "How the tempting re eources of the country are to be ex
plotted Is another matter to which I
phall take tho liberty of from time to
timo calling your attention." From tho report of Secy, of Arpi
culture Houston It appears that the
farmers wife has started a revolt.
She wants to bo paid for her work.
Letters were Kent by the department to 55,000 women asking what they
needed at tho hands ot tho depart
ment. Among tho suggestions which
came in. a largo number say thev
would liko FYuTner Houston to "prove to the man that their work is worth Bomethlng In dollars and cents." If farmers' wifes are to raLse the question of "her own money" this emancipation of woman may lead almost anywhere, Shall women bo permitted to participate in the new presidential primaries advocated by Pres. Wilson In hi message? There is nothing In tho constitution to prevent. This important fact Is brought to public attention by Rep. J. W. Bryan of Washington, who recommends that the new primary law permit women to help nominate the jresident. This can bo done by act of congress as well in New York, which has no woman surage, as in California, where women have tho full franchise. Primary elections are not constitutional elections, Iiryan points out, but are voluntary operations of party organizations and regulations can be made for them by congress. This will certainly appeal to Pres. Wilson and Secy. Bryan, who are known to cherish a deep and abiding disiro for votes for women, but who have so far hesitated to proclaim their feelings openly.
