THEIR NEW YEAH

Services Began in Local Synagogues Wednesday and Feast Will Continue Until Saturday Night. 1 he Jewish New Year began Wednesday and ceremonies will be held up to late Friday night in the Jew.sh fynagoguos of the city. In accordance with their belief the Jewish people send their New Year's greetings to old friends and relatives at this season, wishing them goo'i cheer during the next year. Thursday morning the year will be otficially heralded by the soundini? of coronets in various churches. The old custom of uing a ram's horn has been done away with, in most cases, and the cornet has taken its place. The music will be especially beautiful at the services. At Temple Heth-El music revised by the Jewish-American composer, Schlesslnser, from .some of the old traditional hymns that are centuries old will be rendered. The Kreat personal sacrifices and religious allegiance is manifested by the orthodox Jews who will continue their service up to Friday night. For rheni it will mean four days out of :he week away from their work, as they will observe their Sabbath Saturday and no business is transacted on Sunday. At 7::i0 o'clock Wednesday evening services at Temple Reth-El will begin by a sermon by Rabbi Cronbach when he will use "Union and Strength" as hiy subject. Contributions will be made for the Jewish charities at the evening service. The rabbi Is making a special effort to interest his people in making contributions to the Associated Charities as well as the others, and his sermon will be directed especially to urge that they assist. An effort to organize a federation among local Jewish riiautios is being made by Rabbi Cror.o.-i' h. On Thursday night the service.- at the temple will complete the New Year's ceremonies, when the rabbi will talk on the subject, "Another Year." Temple Heth-Kl religious school will begin Friday. A children's orchestra will be supplied this year and Miss Dora Ilershenow will succeed Dr. Chas. Rosenbury as organist. 0U THE GRIDIRON CHICAGO. Coach A. A. Stagg of Chicago, announced Thursday that after practice today he woul1 pick the Maroon eleven which will face Indiana in Chicago Saturday. He would have announced the selections today, but he was distressed at the showing made by the varsity Wednesday against the freshmen. The regulars at times were helpless against the onslaughts of the Freshmen, who were using Indiana plays learned by Stagg's scouts at last Saturday's Indlana-De-Pauw game. ILLINOIS. Secret practice has been inaugurated by Coach Zupe at Illinois. Candidates for the squad are kept working by electric light until late every evening. WISCONSIN. Scrimmage was abandoned at Wisconsin Tuesday to give the squad a rest before Saturday's game with Lawrence. Coach Juneau lined 4 0 men up at the goal line and at the crack of a pistol shot sent them racing to the center of the field to get ; line on the fastest members of the squad. PURIU!!. Coach Smith announced .Thursday that Dailey would work at center for Purdue against Wabash Saturday. SHE CII ASES MAN. INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 2. After an exciting chase covering nearly a mile.
