The Grayeo Scott Players presented Tho Dawn of a Tomorrow," by Francis Hodgson Burnett, at the Auditorium Sunday in a. very creditable manner. It is called a drama of cheerfulness, was formerly played by Eleanor Kobsou and Ut-rtrude Klliott, and 1.3 an excellent play of English life and will 1 the bill for this Week. Tho story is an interesting one of a wealthy man, despondent on account of ill health, who wanders into the east end of Eotulon, meets a child of tho streets, becomes interested in her affairs and her blind faith in a supremo being and forgets his own ailments in assisting her. Miss Scott in the character of Glad, the waif, gives a character impersonation of genuine merit. Her appearance Is charming although clothed In tattered rags and her voice swinus Into tho cockney dialect of Cheapside most naturally. Her c-erfui disposition, her quaint philosophy, her impish abandon make tho part likeable ind the moral tone and uplift intent that underlies the whole play makes it one to bo commended. Miss Scott changes from the society lady of last week to a part the extreme opposite with appare nt t aso and the role is one that will win her many friends. Mr. Thompson as the nobleman was particularly strong in the first net and carried a difficult scene through in a eapablo manner. Monday Night Sept. S. sions are seldom interesting but it has an important bearing on the action that follows. , Mr. Ford, as Glad's pal, hunted for a crime he did not commit, was good in each of his brief scenes. A bit of speeding up in the second act would help the action and hold the attention of the audience more mtently. A dozen or more minor parts, all having important bearing on the story, were well taken care of. Mr. Newing, as a thief. Miss Knott, as an abused wife and Miss Ball as Polly are entitled to special mention. The staging of the piece was remarkably well done. The interiors were realistic and the fog scene in Apple Blossom Court in east end was equal to any metropolitan production. The various character bits and tle genuine atmosphere of a slum s ction of London were most commendable. tiu: siii:piii;im o: tii:: hills Harold I Jell Wright's book play. ' . v .a-v ; r. 7- : About this time the small boy approaches one of the circus attaches with the daily iury, "Please mister, can't I tote water fer de elephants and get a free ticket fer de show?" Manv of the Jree tickets were distributed. For general appearance the Sells1'loto circus compared with any that h;uo been here. Its horses are the finest seen here in recent years and eho employes were gentlemanly and courteous to the crowds that visited the grounds all day yesterday. A parade will be given at 10:30 a. m. voices and as a climax, one of the players makes a home run around the theater only to be tossed out at home. Link and Robinson, advanced vaudevillians proved a treat. Link and his laugh are enough for one act. He admitted he was one of the few monologuists who refused to black up. Joers and Hogue in a secio-comedy sketch, and Quigly Brothers, Irish comedians, complete the bill. Both acts went good and the Irish team pulled down many laughs during Sunday's show. KVA TAXGUAY. One doesn't have to be a grand opera star to get all the comfort possible to the peripatetic existence of a public entertainer. Eva Tangday; whose methods of making people langh and lover her are eccentric and all her own. has shown that it pays equally as well to make people laugh as it does to stimulate their emotions by the most artistic interprepation of the fantasies of Wagner or Shakespeare. Which, according to the language of the slangist, proves absolutely that Julia Marlowe or Sarah Bernhardt or Mary Garden or Mine. Sembrich "have nothing on Eva Tanguay." Miss Tanguay's personality is unique. A little being of lire and llame and nervous energy and magnetism, she has built up a clientele all her own. which asks nothing of her in the line of "suppcrt" except the perfect "understanding" that nature gave her. Despite her self-.suiliciencv. however. Miss Tanguay as a star announces that she i will have a company of real stars 1 embracing the best acts from the j highest class theaters in New York, j and that for her chorographic-panto- 1 mimic sensation "Salome" she will ; have the assistance of an augmented orchestra. Miss Tanguay comes to the Oliver Tuesday matinee and night. Sept. 0. McADOO'S WAR ON WALL ST. MAKES FINANCIERS SIT UP X SIDNEY ESPKY. WASHINGTON, Sept. S. Sec. McAdoo's efforts to check the operations of Wall st. and the money-sharks that infest large linancial o uters, is the leading topic of conversation among bankers who have been visitinc I Washington during the past three or four weeks. From the south and west and the Pacific" coast states, have come expressions of approval of the unlieie ;inrHiiitii't1 bv the trasurv - - department. . Chief among these was the notice several weeks ago to the banking interests of New York. Chicago. Kansas City and other centers, that the treasury was prepared to extend to banking interests in the south, middle west and Pacif.c coast points: a loan of $ r0.0(o.MV' to aid in moving the crops. Wall st. at Jir:t "laughed up its sleeve" s it was thought that the move the treasury department would make would result only in centering in New York a greater volume of money and money sharks therefore were Jubilant. Tuesday least six per cent and sometimes as high as eight, depending upon the sections of the country to which it was Fent, looked pretty good to them. But their little dream soon was dispelled when Sec. McAdoo sent into the vast agricultural section and asked that bankers make a personal visit to Washington for the purpose of conferring with the secretary of the treasury and his assistant, John Skelton Williams, concerning the proposed loan. Still the money power felt that the secretary's endeavors would not greatly affect their' llttl tea party which they anticipated during the months of September and October. Awoke to McAtloo. However when tho announcement was made that this sum could be lent to the small bankers direct and that guaranteed commercial paper would be accepted as security for government deposits, New York and Chicago awoke to the little joke that Mr. McAdoo had sprung. Active preparations are being made to carry out the secretary's ideas and within a short time 550.000,000 will be scattered among banks in the south, middle west and Pacific coast. And this is not all. Mr. McAdoo has intimated that if J50.000.000 is not enopgh there is $500,000,000 In the treasury that can be sent out to relieve any conditions of a tight money market. This s the first step that the Wilson administration has taken to prevent concerted action by "large business" to bring about a. panic which will jeopardize the interests of the democratic party. McAdoo's action is another of the administration's efforts to reduce the burdens of the people. The tariff bill now in congress is designed to lower the cost of living by bringing into active competition with American made goods, the articles of commerce manufactured abroad by low priced labor. Luxuries naturally bear the highest rate of revenue with a corresponding decrease of custom tax in necessities. The president also his decided to try to appease the farming element which to a great extent was made hostile to him through the removal of duty on wheat. He is advocating a system of rural cre'dits such as is in existence in European countries and which is designed to enable the farmer to obtain money for crop moving purposes or planting at easy rates of interest. The president the other day in a special message stated that the ad-
