The latter naturally require more care and attention as the atmosphere of the home, and its environment Is very far reaching. Of course this does not mean that every room 'n the house should have the mho color scheme, as no matter what the temperament of the woman, shades, tints and tones possess greater value than the primary colors. The jrreat decorators of today, when submitting plans and schemes for the decoration of a house, are careful to note the characteristics of those who will or do dwell therein. They realize thit the woman richly gowned requires a certain richness in "her r.Jrroundlngs, while the sweet little woman whoso charm is a Huffy Kontleness, is far more seductive in totally different surroundings. This fact she consciously, or it may he unconsciously, expresses in her clothes and should do so in her home. Hut it must not be imagined that woman may be broadly divided into two classes; there is an infinite variety; and it is in uniting and blending the different coloring to enhance the ?ubtleties and charms or the character and appearance of the individual woman that those skilled in the crt of mural and other decorations have to exercise all their ingenuity. It Is to be regretted that women do not more fully realize what a powerful weapon color is and the assistance it is to them in enhancing their beauty. Nor is it sulliclently appreciated that women no matter whether they are living the strenuous:, social or professional life of today are far happier when they dwell amidst surroundings which are suited to them. One often hears the remark, "I like this room, it is so restful." which is simply because the scheme of decoration and color is in harmony with Its occupant. Of course It is a mistake to decorate all rooms to suggest repose; it is essential that some should be endowed with an air of brightness and festivitv, which can easily he made subservient to the characteristics of the hostess. The keynote of modern decoration is. or rather should be, to arrange rooms to harmonize with the appearance, taste and even voice of those who are destined to dwell in them, avoiding anything that will strike a J.irrini? note on the mentality of the hostess.

WASHINGTON'. Aug. 12. Though It had been expected that the Japanese reply to the Ftate department's last note regarding the protest against the California alien land legislation would be submitted before Monday, when that legislation became effective, there has been no further move in the matter. Ambassador Chinda has served notice upon Secy. Bryan, however, that the Japanese answer will be forthcoming in due course. Meanwhile there is some expectation that a test case will be instituted before the California courts, by some individual Japanese resident whose property rights are threatened. It will then remain to be seen whether the Japanese government Is prepared to push its original contention that it is the duty of the United States government to intervene in the case to protect the treaty rights of an alien resident.

E. G. REYNOLDS IS DEAD AT HIS HOME

Former Knjrinoer on the I.ake Shore bj Stricken Suddenly Wire Can't Aroue Him.

KL.KITART, Ind.. Aug. 12. 111bridge ft. Reynolds, a resident of K!khart for nearly 50 years and a retired Lak Shore engineer, died suddenly at 7 o'clock tonight after an attack of heart trouble of a half hour's duration. Although rast 73 years of age. Mr. Reynolds had ren in the best of health and was unusually active. Two hours prior to his death he had ridden his bicycle to the postotlice and tack to his home. He then complained of not feeling well and laid down upon a couch, in a short time "he- declared that he felt much better. When his wife sought to rouse him from a seeming peaceful sleep, she could get no respor.se. The family physician was summoned but his efforts were unavailing. Mr. Reynolds was a railroader in the days of the old wood burning engines and was fond of tilling remarkable tales of the runs made over the division at that time. A wife, son and daughter survive. The deceased was a member of the lllkhart lodge of the Rrotherhood of locomotie Kngir.ecrs and of the local NVr.onio order.
