OPPOSITION TO THE NICARAGUA TREATY

Liberals In Il-juMi! Do Not Want United States to I-MnhlMi n rrotcctorato.

WASHINGTON. Au?. 2. Opposition in the penal? to the plan of I'rc.-,-WHson and Fecy. IJryan for an American protectorate over Nicaragua has received strong support from representatives of the librral party In that republic. When the senate committer on foreign relations take up the new treaty attain Saturday it will be with the. knowledge that a strong element in Nicaragua is adverse to yielding any vestis-'e. of sovereignty to the United States. Protects against the treaty are bein: made in Washington by Gen. Francisco Altschul. a representative of the Nicarairuan liberalises. He contends that many of his people do not favor the policy of the protectorate although they are willing to make a treaty to Rive the United States the proposed perpetual canal building right over the Nicaragua n route. A preliminary draft of the treaty Is now before the senate committee and will be considered at a meeting Saturday. Sen. IJorah, Clarke of Arkan.as, Williams and others who will oppose the convention, base their objections upon the claim that a protectorate over any central American country would be a radical departure from the settled foreign policy of the United states.

BITTER FEELING SAID TO HAVE CAUSED WRECK SLTERIOK, Wis., Aug. 2. Alleging that bitter feeling between the trains crews and the men working on the .ore docks, who mostly are foreigners, is to blame for an accident Thursday night In which two men were killed, two more probably fatally hurt and five others injured, the ore dock employes have refused to go to work and the big Allouez plant of the Great Northern railway is tied up. The suspension of work with the consequent interruption of the railroad operations, delays at the mines and the boats in the ore trade, entails a loss of $ ICO, 000 a day according to estimates by railroad olticials. The switchmen on duty. Thursday night, it is Mild, disappeared and have not since reported. An investigation is being conducted by Supt. Morrill of the ore docks who declared that If the acts alleged by the dockmen are substantiated an application will be made to the authorities for warrants charging the- railroad men with
