Although such a nice disposition, the mother would havo little to do with this daughter and always gave her the poorest clothes and the plainest food and tho most disagreeable work to do! Ono day tho plain daughter was obliged to go and fetch water from a veil nearly a milo away. As sho was Ftanding by tho well, tho second time, Fho paw a shadow on tho ground, booking up, sho beheld a queer, little, old woman who looked like a beggar! Getting tho News" Is Some Job if You IJelicve This Importer's Nlco Yarn,

"Get down on Colfax bridge. A man's leg was found there." Thus spoke tho desk sergeant at tho polico station to an energetic young reporter lato Thursday afternoon. Faint suspicions arose in tho mind of tho reporter. Ho thought of the numerous jokea told about cub reporters just starting In the business. "Where do you get that stuff?" ho asked. "It's true. Tho Tribune man just left on it. I sent a man over thero but two fellows carried it away before tho policemen got there," said liarnhart. tho sergeant.

"If it'a true, it's a e-ood story, and 1

if It isn't they'll kid mo the reft of my life," was tho way ho figured it. Ho even went so far u-a to call tho office. Ho left for the scene of the gruesome tind. All the way over to the bridgo he wa thinking how ho would get back at tho cps around the station if it wasn't true. Ho arrived at tho bridge and there he found the Tribune reporter wandering about looking for blood stains. There weren't any. Had thero been any mind readers around who should happen to tell the polico the thoughts of thoso reporters, the men at the station would have a clear case of libel. About that time a kind hearted detective who knew the frame-up came along and told them all about iL Nobody lost a b and nobody found it. Not even a wooden leg. Together the two reporters walked Kick to their offices determined to bear their humiliation in silence. And the ofilco boy U humming: Oh. there was an old man. And he had a wooden leg." etc.

PRESIDENT NAMES THE MEN TO ACT IN STRIKE

William I;. Cliambvrs U Selected and CI. W. W. Hanger Is Named Assistant.

WASHINGTON. July 1?. Pres. Wilson late Thursday selected William L. Chambers of the District of Columbia, to bo commissioner of mediation and conciliation, under the Newlands act. and O. W. W. Hanger as his assistant. Their name will

be sent to the senate Friday. Tho

other two members of the new board will be Judge Martin Knapp of tho IT. S. commerce court and Eouis F. Post, assistant secretary of labor. Immediate confirmation of tho president's nominations Is expected. Democrats and republicans in both houses of congress joined hands Tuesday to put through promptly the Newlands bill with tho hope of averting the threatened strike of SO, 000 conductors and trainmen on eastern railroads. The roads and their employes had agreed to submit their wage dispute to the new board of mediation and conciliation. Tho board is a permanent institution to aid in tho adjustment of disputes between railroads and their employes, and the act creating it provides elaborate machinery for carrying on the work. Tho commissioner and his assistant will devote all of their time to their new duties, but the other two members of the board will retain their present federal position and act as mediators only when called upon. Judge Chambers, chosen to head tho board, was at one time chief justice of the international court at amoa, and since 1901 has been a member of the Spanish treaty claims commission. Ho has had considerable -experience, however, in arbitrating labor disputes.' In 1910 he was selected as a third arbitrator of the controversy between 49 railroads operating in the territory west of Chicago and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen.
