The Devil Ruled at the Devil's Ball And Two Persons Went to Awful Death
Special Correspondence. BY JACK JUNGMEYER. SACRAMENTO, CAL., July 7. --It took the death of two persons to shock California into a realization of the frightful effects upon its young girls of the "chicken dances" and "rag" orgies theretofore easily tolerated by the general public and its officials. The awakening came a few days ago with the notorious "devil's ball" at Mills Station on the Folsom road, where after a night of riotous abandon in which young girls and older women yielded themselves to what Dist. Atty. E.S. Wachhorst characterized as shocking indecencies, one of the dancers, Miss Gace Benson, flung a laugh at her gyrating companions, went out into the starlight and drank a vial of poison. She and Guy Pierce, the man who attempted to get her to a physician, had their lives snuffed out when the machine in which they were speeding drove over an enbankment. All the brazen abandon, which the affair was to encourage, was put into the name of the event. The "devil's ball," the promoter, Blackie Thomas, called it, "where everything went". No worse, essentially, than scores
of other dances of the same character that had been held from time to time throughout the country, feeding the maw of white slavery, this debauch with its tragic ending, roused the fathers and mothers to a furore of indignation. Subsequent investigation showed that 19 of every 20 cases of youthful deliquency in Sacramento alone were attributed by Juvenile Judge J. W. Hughes to roadhouse dances and joy rides. "Wipe out these orgies that are contaminating the youth of both sexes," came the peremptory demand of aroused citizens. "'Devil's balls' are claiming too heavy a toll in wrecked lives." The result will be that Sacramento will enact an anti-ragging ordinance and that her example must be followed by the entire state. "Blackie" Thomas, who promoted the devil's ball," is undergoing a 30day sentence in the county jail, following his plea of guilty to a charge of outraging public decency. His case marked the first invocation of a law which had been lying innocuous in the code for years. It has sounded the death knell for the "rag" in California, in the belief of the Sacramento county officials.

ERIE OUT TO GREET COMMODORE PERRY
Winding up their stay in South Bend, the Fife brothers, who have been conducting revival services at the First Christian church for the last three weeks, gave a musical concert at the church Monday evening. The entertainment was largely attended. Kobert S. Fife, one of the brothers, impersonated Abraham Lincoln, winning favor with his audience when he delivered the famous Gettysburg address given by the great emancipator. Evangelist Clyde L. Fife, manager of the party, received his check early Tuesday morning at the Merchants' National bank. Since Sunday night it has been increased to over $600. They will not leave the city until Wednesday morning, as they wish to stay for the reception for new members, to be held at the church Tuesday evening. Thursday morning the Fife party will arrive in Monmouth, Ill., where they will open a campaign in the First Christian church, ,the oldest Christian church in the state of Illinois.
ERIE, Pa., July 8. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, impersonated by Ludwig Meyer, a local business man, left Fort Anthony Wayne at the Pennsylvania Soldiers' & Sailors' home Monday evening at 6 o'clock and driving over the route followed
by the hero of Put-in-Bay, entered
Erie an hour later. The city was ablaze with light and color in commemoration of the centennial celebration of the famous victory, one of a series of similar events to be held at ports on the great lakes. The program as carried out was designed to recall scenes enacted while Perry and his men were building and fitting out their ships in Erie harbor. The procession was met in the outskirts of the city by civic organizations and escorted to Perry square, where before a great crowd the freedom of Erie was formally presented to the distinguished guest. The principal address was made by Mayor Wm. J. Stern, to which "Commodore Perry" responded.

IN FIGHT FOR FATHER'S ESTATE
Court Holds late W. E. Mick, Who Left Fortune to Depauw, Was of Unsound Mind. LEBANON, Ind., July 8. The will of the late W. K. Mick of Indianapolis was set aside by a jury in the circuit court here Monday after an hour's deliberation. Mick in his will left his widow $1,800 a year and the remainder of his estate was left in
trust the income from which was to have been divided among three daughters, Mrs. Florence Robinson, Mrs. Matti Dew and Mrs. Lena Brooks. The entire estate was to have gone to Depauw university at the death of the beneficiaries for the education of students studying for the Methodist ministry. Mrs. Robinson brought suit to set aside the will of her father on the
ground that he was of unsound mind and that undue influence had been brought to bear upon him. The latter charge was dropped by agreement. The trial has been in progress for three weeks.
