Late News From the Surrounding Towns in:uiui:N springs Dr. W. E. Brown, a graduate of the University of Michigan, will open a dental office in the rooms formerly occupied by Dr. J. W. Kistner in the Reynolds block. The office will be opened Monday, July 7. Mrs. Helen 1'ond of Richmond, Va and Mrs. May White of Chicago were visitors at the home of their uncle, R. 11. Patterson, Tuesday. The June Bard enjoyed an all day picnic at the Indian Fields Tuesday. In the afternooii a number of the party made a trip to Bear Cave on .Lake Chapin. S. IS. Burke, who Is working for the Kawneer Company cf Niles, is at home for a few days nation. Mr. and Mrs. J. Howard Taylor of Chicago are here for a few days' visit with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Wetmore. Gus Fammel of Niles was a business visitor here Wednesday. Notwithstanding the very warm evening, about four hundred wers present at the opera house Monday evening U hear the Christian Science lecture given by Frank H. Leonard of Boston, Mass. Dr. W. F. Bullard motored to South Bend Tuesday on professional business. Mrs. Edna Kessler of Cincinnati,, Ohio, is a visitor at the J. C. Wicoff home. A. O. T. Astenius of Chicago visited friends and relatives here Monday. O. E. Cuthbert was a business visitor in St. Joseph Tuesday. Clarence Bartz of Stevensville will have charge of the Epworth league service at the M. E. church Sunday evening. Mr. Bartz is a student at the Northwestern University. Mrs. Georgia Harper is visiting in St. Joseph at the home of her cousin. Mrs. G. N. Otwell. The Episcopal choir boys of Chicago are here for a several weeks' outing at their camp on the east side of Eake Chapin. For the past three years they have enjoyed a summer's outing here. They will sing at the Lutheran church Sunday evening. The W. C. T .U. met Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Annie Hadlock. Herbert M. Lohr was surprised by a number of his friends who gather ed at the home of tho Misses Lillie and Ada Taylor Tuesday evening. A social evening, games and music were enjoyed. Dainty refreshments of ice cream and cake were served. Mr. Lohr leaves next week to Join his parents. Mr. and Mrs. T. II. Lohr, at St. Louis, Mo. FIVK POINTS Mr. and Mrs. Ed. HUNGER STRIKERS ARE RETURNED TO PRISON IXDNDON, July 3. Mi?s Annie Kenney, militant organizer and Miss Rachel Barrett, assistant editor of the JSuffraget, who wero at liberty under the "cat and mouse" act, were rearrested Thursday afternoon while they were out driving and were promptly returned to Holloway jail. Harry Goelitz competing under the colors of the Chicago Athletic association won the Decathlon in tho international athletic carnival at Grant park today, finishing with a total of 20 points. Ho is .an Oak park high school boy. Charles Bachman, C. A. A., was second with 29 and John Nicholson, Missouri A. C, third, with 29 1-2. Five events of the Decathlon had been completed yesterday. Nicholson won the sixth event, the 110 meter hurdle. Bachman took the discus throw with a distance of 11S feet 11 inches, and the pole vault 10 feet 4 Inches. Karine of the Finnish Athletic club took the last two events, the javelin throw, distance 156 feet, 4 inches, and the 1,500-meter run in 5 minutes 1 1-5 seconds. O'BRIEN IS NOW THE PROPERTY OF THE SOX Former Ccnttal Leaguer is Disposed of by the IJoj-ton Americans. No Figures Given. The Chicago White Sox have landed another pitcher in the. person of Tommy O'Brien, who during the season of 1910 was a familiar figure around the Central league circuit. Tommy or "Buck" was sold by Boston but no figures were announced. O'Brien had his first year with the Boston Americans last year and went good. He was rather wild and made an attempt to vrin a game during the world series. He became involved in a fight with Joe Wood, according to the dope, and as a result Tommy hasn't been .any too strong with the champs. This is thought to have been a cause for the sale. SILVER EDGES MEET THE GERGACZS TODAY A fast ball pme is promised for this afternoon when the Silver Edijes and the Gergaczs, two of tho fastest ball clubs in tho city, line up for the Kamo at prinbrook park at o o'clock. Both teams have been playing pood ball and several auditions are to re made to tho Silver Edges for this afternoon's contest. Tho boys lost last Sunday's game but claim they will show tho Gergaczs how the national pastime should bo played. If the weather is not too warm, a large crowd should be out to witness the contest. On Sunday the Silver Edges will meet either the K. & S. or the 1 lousier Creams. Eoth of these teams are composed of fast ball players and a good game should result.

$2,000 BURNED Fire Department Makes Good Record for June- Chemical Traveled 75 Miles. The chemical truck at the central fire station has all of the records for June except as to the number of feet of ladders raised. During the month the chemical responded to 23 alarms, traveled 75 1-2 miles, laid 3,250 feet of hose and used M9 gallons of chemicals. The only other truck to travel more than the usual number of miles was truck No. 2, central station, which went 47 miles. In all $2,140 in damage was done by fire in the city during June, while 582,225 was the estimated value of tho buildings in danger while the fire was burning. The estimated value of the contents risked was $12,420. Ten men were arrested to every woman last month. There were 156 male arrests, while only 15 women were taken into the station. Over 1,200 miles was traveled by tho police automobile in answering 204 calls. Goods to the amount of $1,251.60 that were reported lost or stolen wero recovered by the department. W. E. Williams, city electrician, issued 161 permits to wire buildings during the month. Five cases of defective wiring were condemned. ILXSLTNGKIl FOn COUNCIL.
