Thc expenses of thc house of rep resentatives ot the United states are estimated at '2000 dollars a day. The bankrupt bill has been debated ;i0 days, consequently that discussion in thc house alone ha2 cost thc ia-j
lion $60,000! It is true, that some, but not much, othur business has been transacted in the mean time.
The house generally sits about four ours in each day; its expenses are therefore about 600 dollars per hour. It an orator speaks two hours, hi3 speech costs 1000 dollars; if three hours, 1500 dollars; if four hours, 2000 dollars! What speech delivered on this question, can be said to have been worth to the nation even :00 dollars?
