AN INTREPID CHILD.
From the Crrcenhuroh (nn J?-.,'.,.
On the 25th ult. a dwelling-! louse belonging to Gen. Joseph Markle.
situate within a few hundred yards of the Sewickly mills, and occupied
ny ;ur. Jacob JY1. Young and family, with every article of value in it, w as
entirely consumed by tire. The accident occurred in the ab-ence of
Mr. and Mrs. Young, the latter hav
ing left her dwelling, as she suppos
ed but for a few minutes. Before
?he could return it was all in ruins
Three female children were in the
house when it took fire; onb aged four years and two months, another two years and four months, and an infant in the cradle hx months old. The eldest child, becoming alarmed at the threatning danger, went in pursuit of its mother, but had not proceeded far when it returned
and rescued its two sisters from (he
names; the pillow in the cradle had
actually caught fire when the infant
was taken out ol it. Phis child then
succeeded in getting two sets of cups
and saucers, a hat, and two female dresses out of the hoes . a.;d
made an effort to save other cloth
ing, in which, however, it failed. It is very seldom, indeed, that we hear of so much courage and presence of mind, in so young a child. The manner in which the fire originated could not be ascertained.
LOUISVILLE MARKET. Tobacco $5 1-4 a 5 1-2, and for
a few hhds. 5 3-4 a $G 1-5 have been given. The latter quotations, will howcvei in our opinion be main
tained ; and as not more than two or three hhds. of very first chop have
been so!d at those prices, $5 1-2 may be considered the present market
price for tobacco of the first quality.
I lour Otold wheat, or trom O-
hio, commands in small quantities, 6 1-4 a $6 1-2. Whiskey 30 cents per gal. brisk, i Exchenigc 165 to 170 Kentucky,
or Commonwealth paper for 100
specie. 1 here is a great scarcity
of specie in the market, and wc
have no doubt the arival of a few
thousand dollars, would produce a
difference of o to 10 per cent, in the
rate of Exchange. Aub. Adv,
Extract of a letter from Portland f March 5. "We have this day received the
melancholy intelligence, that the College at Brunswick was last night
consumed by fire. It commenced in
an upper chamber, and had made such rapid progress before it was
discovered it ballled all the exertions
made to stop it, and the edifice was
entirely destroyed" Amcr, Adt.
