SWIFT WALKING.
STEPHEN DECATUR'S name
and trlory are so perfectly identified
with that of the American INavy that
we cannot reflect upon the renown of
the latter, without beholding with it the gallant achievements of the
former. He was an early and favor
ite pupil of the imortalized Frlble, who may as emphatically be called the Preceptor of the American Navy, as the venerable John Adams had been pronounced its father. When we consider Decatur, as a
youthful champion, boarding a Cor- Jack James
sair, slaying its commander, who had treacherously slain his brother as a commander undauntedly meeting and capturing the floating bulwark of Britain as the Commodore of a squadron, conquering a Barbery lower, and compelling it to sue for peace Kir an accomplished officer at the seat of Government, assiting in giving perfection and power to
the iNavy of our Republic. In each of the capacities, his character equally excites our admiration. The ob
ject of this work is to enable the
reader to (race the progress of this hero, the pride and boast of our country, from the first dawnings of hi greatness, to the meridian splendor of' hi ulory. The materials from which the work will he prepared are of unquestionable authenticity; and the volume will not be swelled with
matter unconnected with the life,
character and achievements of DE
CATUR and the original progress
and present state of the American
