Marriage of Young Couple at Methodist Parsonage Wednesday.
Rev. C. L. Harper, of Trinity M. E. church, performed a jCeremony at the parsonage Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the principals being Arthur M. Sands, of Hanging Grove township, and Mrs. Myriam Culp, of,Gilam township. He is a son of Martin V. Sands, of Kankakee township, and a brother Of Chas. Sands, assistant cashier of the State Bank. The bride is the widow of Jerry Culp, and daughter of Squire Logan, of Gillam. They are a fine looking couple and will reside on a farm in Hanging Grove township. C. F. Zacher and wife and her sister, Mrs. J. P. Braden,, arrived here last evening to visit relatives, he being a son of Henry Zacher, of Newton township, and a brother of Mrs. Chas. Platt, and the women being former residents of this county. Mr. Zacher is the yard foreman of the Iron Ore railroad at Iron, Minn., and Mrs. Braden lives* at St Paul. Within the past year the Iron Ore railroad has hauled 13,000,000 tons of ore. Mr. Zacher reports that the switchmen’s' strike has had a bad effect on the northwest, as practically no freight can get past St. Paul. The yards there are filled with cars and very little freight gets out after getting into either St. Paul or Minneapolis. In consequence the supply of certain imported necessities is quite short at his home. He bought a car load of hay at $13.40 a ton and was offered $22 per ton for it. The timber industry, which is one of the big labor occupations of the winter time in that country is not flourishing as much as usual this winter owing to the fact that a big snow came there before the freeze, thus protecting the ground from the cold weather and keeping it so soft in the swamps over which the logs are hauled (that it will not bear up the heavy weight. One or two of the larger complies have made roads by having the snow packed down and then covered over with water, which freezes and makes a substantial road bed. This plan, however, is too expensive Ccr the smaller concerns who are forced out of business for the winter. This is the fourth trip Mr. Zacher has made to Jasper county in twenty years.
