Can’t Fight In Lake County; Sheriff Grant Stops Gary Bout.
An effort was made to pull off a tenround fight at Gary Monday night. Sheriff Thos. Grant, however, had a seat in the front row and just as the fight was entering the third round he placed the principals and some of the promoters under arrest. The fellow with the money, however, made his escape, and the victimized crowd put up a big “holler” because he had promised them that the police would not interfere. The Hammond Times wonders when people will quit being suckers and quit putting up their money for some Chicago prize fight promoter to get away with. Sheriff acted under direct orders from Governor Marshall, who says the fight lid shall stay on tight during his administration of the governor’s office.
