“Fat” Hopkins to Lead Little Giants in Nineteen Ten.
Another Rensselaer boy has been selected to captain a college football team. Ray Hopkins, called “Fat” by all of his Rensselaer friends, will lead the “Little Giants,” of Wabash on the gridiron in 1910. In his last year in the Rensselaer high school Hopkins was the captain and his leadership proved very successful. Of his election the Crawfordsville correspondent to the Indianapolis News says: Ray Hopkins, of Rensselaer, left tackle on the 1909 Wabash college football eleven, was elected captain of the Little Giants for next year at a meeting of the fourteen “W” men during the chapel hour this morning. In the election Hopkins defeated Oscar L. Barr, of Bruceville, right tackle on the team. The election of Hopkins was marked by one of the most bitter factional fights ever waged for the selection of a captain of any athletic team. In the fight one fraternity was lined up with the non-fraternity men against all the other five fraternities in the school. Hopkins will be a senior in college next year. After announcing yesterday morning the names of the “W” men, the faculty athletic committee discovered that a “W” had not been awarded to W. P. Shreiner, substitute tackle, of Delphi, who was entitled to the honor. Shreiner received his “W” this morning before the election of a captain.
