Phenix Fire Insurance Company Lost a Million Through Officers.
The Phenix Fire Insurance Company, of Brooklyn, is under investigation for Irregularities, and its president, George P. Sheldon, has been deposed. He is supposed to have defrauded the company out of a million dollars, while to cover up his methods of converting the company’s cash to hlB own uses, the reports of the company to the government have been juggled for the past ten years. Other officers of the company are said to have borrowed from $40,000 to $lOG f--000 for their personal uses. The securities of the company are thought to be intact ahd the insured in the company amply protected.
Ethel Evans, 16 years ol<j, of Mt. Carmel, 111., was Monday restored to her mother, Mrs. F. A. Maether, of Chicago Heights, 111., from whom she was kidnapped by her father, Seth Evans, when ten years old. Through all these mother has continually kept up a vain search for her child, and It was only through a newspaper story that she was accidentally restored.
