Obituary of Sidney Steward, One of Our Oldest Citizens.
The life of Sidney Steward would make an interesting book. He was one of the pioneers in Jasper and Newton counties, having lived here for 59 years, except for 8 years which he spent in the west. The following obituary is taken from the Mt. Ayr Pilot;--—•— Sidney’Steward was born in Deleware county, Ohio, May 24, 1827, and died Nov. 4, 1909, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 10 days. When but thirteen years of age he moved with his parents to Rensselaer, Ind. After living in that vicinity for five years he moved to Jackson township, Newton county. With the exception of eight years which he spent on the frontiers of lowa and Kansas, his residence here has been continuous. In the year 1848 he was united in marriage to Lowisa Elijah, to which union was born seven children, four sons and three daughters, the union being dissolved by death. He was* again married on April 10, 1866, to Mary A. Reed, and to this union was born one son and one daughter. With the exception of one son and one daughter, his children all survive him; his second wife dying several years ago. He united with the M. E. church at the age of 20 years, and since that time has lived a consistent Christian life. He leaves four sons, three daughters and innumerable friends to mourn his death.
